Many tenants of panel multi-storey buildings complain about too good audibility of what is happening in their neighbors. It is only natural that they have a desire to improve sound insulation. Achieving tangible results will require an integrated approach.

Eliminating sound passages

The walls of panel houses have weak points that allow noise from neighbors to pass through. For example, holes for installing sockets. In order to simplify the production of panels, they are often made in the form of a through channel. If checking such places shows the presence of holes leading into the next apartment, it is better to plaster them, and move the sockets to another place.

If this is not possible, try to soundproof these places. You can fill part of the cavity with plaster and mineral wool. The first will stop air exchange between rooms, and the second will absorb sound waves.

Another possible source of noise is ceiling holes for fixing luminaires. In some series of panel houses, rather thin floor slabs are used, and the presence of through holes in them leads to good sound conductivity. Do the same operations with them as with the sockets.

Pay attention to the places where heating pipes enter your apartment. Subject to technology, these places should be isolated, but quite often this is neglected. If you find through holes there, you need to seal them up. Plaster the large ones, and the small ones can be filled with silicone sealant.

Check the joints of the wall panels. Due to the shrinkage of the building, cracks can form there through which sound passes. If their width does not exceed a few millimeters, fill them with acrylic or silicone sealant and then putty. Wider ones need to be plastered.

Local corrective actions to eliminate audio leakage may not completely resolve the issue. In this case, it may be necessary to create a soundproof partition. Usually, drywall is used for this, fixed with a system of metal profiles, and mineral wool.

Remember that metal transmits sound well, and the frame from the profiles sometimes turns into a sound transmission bridge. To avoid this effect, use a special insulating tape, which is glued in the places where the profiles are adjacent to the wall. Due to its porous structure, it absorbs sound vibrations and improves the quality of sound insulation.

Except for the tape, the installation of the frame is carried out using standard technology. Guide profiles are attached to the floor and ceiling, after which they are joined by racks, which need to be reinforced with additional attachment points to the wall, every 50 cm.

Having assembled the frame, you can begin to lay mineral wool inside it. This should be done in several layers: the denser the cotton wool pillow, the better it will cope with its task. Avoid voids, do not allow the formation of gaps between the sheets of material.

Mineral wool is covered with plasterboard. If you want to minimize the penetration of extraneous sounds into the room, the sheets of material can be fastened in two layers. This will increase the cost of the structure, but will significantly improve noise protection.
