Hippeastum is a bulbous perennial that needs an annual rest period and a transplant. Hippeastrum is purchased most often in the form of bulbs, although it reproduces well by seeds.

Instructions

Step 1

After the hypeastrum has blossomed and its seeds are ripe, the flower arrow is removed, cut to the base, and the plant is transferred to the accumulation of energy for the next flowering. Almost every bulb seeks to bloom again, releasing an arrow immediately after the first, but this can only be allowed for those flowers whose bulb is close to 10 cm in diameter, otherwise it will be difficult for the hippeastrum to survive the winter. After flowering, you need to water the plant often and apply nitrogen fertilizers weekly so that the hippeastrum grows as many leaves as possible until the end, and its bulb increases in diameter. In the middle lane, the hippeastrum begins to be prepared for the dormant period from mid-August. Watering is reduced, yellowing leaves are cut off. When there are 1-2 leaves on the bulb, stop watering completely. If after a week the leaves do not fall off, cut them at the root and take the bulb out of the pot. Packed in 2-3 layers of paper or old newspapers and put in the refrigerator, in the vegetable compartment.

Step 2

For wintering, hypeastrum bulbs are sent in October-November and taken out for transplantation in March. This plant does not need a spacious pot, as in the open space the hippeastrum will grow leaves instead of flowers. Spacious pots are used for growing seedlings for the first 5-7 years after planting and for reanimating bulbs in poor condition. For a healthy and strong bulb, which has just been taken out of wintering and planted in the hope of flowering, the distance from it to the walls of the pot should not exceed 1 cm. The bulb is inspected before planting, if rotten and wet spots are found, they are cut off with a sharp knife to healthy tissue, processing slices with brilliant green. Remove dried roots and plant in a prepared pot.

Step 3

If children are formed on the bulb, they are removed and planted separately, because the plant with children will not bloom. A 2-3 cm drainage layer is placed on the bottom of the hippeastrum pot, on it is a layer of fertile soil, slightly moistened. The soil layer should be of such a height that the bulb rises by a third above the soil surface; it is impossible to deepen the hippeastrum. The bulb is placed in the center, the empty space between it and the walls of the pot is filled with soil, and the pot with hypeastrum is placed on the lightest window sill, if necessary, equipping the backlight with fluorescent lamps.

Step 4

For 10-14 days after planting, the hippeastrum is not watered so that it releases a flower arrow. Watering begins only when the buds open. When watering, the plant immediately enters the growth stage, and many leaves do not leave energy for the flower, which is why the hippeastrum is not watered for so long. Then the growth of the hippeastrum and care for it continues according to the same scheme - intensive watering and feeding, and in the fall the bulb is taken out of the pot to be put for the winter and planted in the spring.
