Arrowroot is a genus of deciduous ornamental plants of the arrowroot family, loved by florists and gardeners around the world. The homeland of arrowroot is the tropical forests of South America, therefore, despite its general unpretentiousness, this plant is extremely demanding on the water regime.

Necessary

Fertilizers, settled water, expanded clay, earthen mixture, fluorescent lamps

Instructions

Step 1

Place the plant in the brightest room. Arrowroot needs bright diffused light, but cannot stand direct sunlight - this causes the leaves to dry out. An alternative option is artificial lighting with fluorescent lamps. They must work a total of 16 hours a day.

Step 2

Pay attention to the quality of the soil. Ideal is slightly acidic, with a pH level of about six. A suitable mixture can be made, for example, from humus, leaf and peat soil in a 1: 1: 1 ratio or peat, garden soil and sand (also 1: 1: 1). Do not forget about good drainage, expanded clay, coarse sand, shards are suitable for this. You can add some charcoal if desired.

Step 3

Provide the arrowroot with the correct temperature regime. This thermophilic plant does not tolerate cold or overheating. The optimum air temperature in the spring-summer period is 22-24 degrees, and from October to February - 18-20 degrees.

Step 4

Do not create drafts in the room where the plant is located and keep it away from radiators. Indoor conditions are not very good for arrowroots, they grow best in terrariums and greenhouses.

Step 5

Take care of the humidity in the air. It should be at least 80 percent, ideally up to 90. In addition, arrowroots require regular spraying. Before the procedure, the water should be defended, and the soil should be covered with cellophane to avoid stagnation and decay. In the pallet on which the pot stands, it is good to place the moistened expanded clay. Do not overdo it: over-watering the stems will begin to lose cellular turgor, which leads to rotting.

Step 6

Shower the plant from time to time. This will help to effectively remove dust from the leaves. Do not forget to cover the pot with a plastic bag during the procedure.

Step 7

Feed arrowroot twice a month. Alternate diluted mineral and organic fertilizers for ornamental foliage plants.

Step 8

Prune wilted leaves. Keep in mind that in indoor conditions, the tips of healthy leaves tend to dry out - despite all the "water treatments".

Step 9

Observe the "behavior" of arrowroot: under favorable conditions, its leaves are arranged horizontally, under unfavorable conditions, they fold together and stretch upward.

Step 10

If damaged by pests - spider mites or thrips - treat the leaves with insecticides. For the complete destruction of insects, the treatment must be repeated several times.
