At home, many of us prefer to install plastic windows, although wooden windows are still very popular. If the glass breaks for any reason, a professional glazier can replace it. On the other hand, why call a glazier when you can replace the glass yourself. This will save you time and money. Before starting the replacement process, you must prepare all the necessary items and materials.

Necessary

  • New glass to fit the window;
  • Hammer or mallet;
  • Safety glasses with work gloves;
  • Pliers;
  • Chisel;
  • Putty with a spatula;
  • Thin nails.

Instructions

Step 1

Be sure to wear work gloves before work. Better yet, wear thick mittens over the gloves. Now take out the broken glass. Collect the fragments in a cardboard box, then remove the remaining glass from the frame, gently shaking them. The small glass can be removed from the hinges to make it easier to remove the remaining glass shards from the frame.

Step 2

You can remove the old putty from the window frame as follows: attach the chisel to the frame at an angle, then tap on its handle with a mallet or hammer. Take your time, try not to leave any pieces of putty or scratches on the frame.

Step 3

In the course of work, you will come across small carnations with which the glass was once attached to the frame, in order to smear it later. Remove them with pliers, not with a chisel. Now take a fresh putty (with your bare hands), roll it into a thin sausage and carefully saw it around the perimeter of the frame.

Step 4

It's time to put in a new glass. Insert the glass by pressing the edges against the putty. Next, secure the glass with thin studs driven in at a distance of 25 cm from each other. Do not break the glass using a hammer.

Step 5

Now roll out the putty to make it even thinner than the first one. Place it around the entire perimeter of the glass. This will reinforce the glass in the frame and hide the studs from view. Excess putty can be removed with a spatula.
