The floor surface needs to be leveled before installing the finishing coat. It can be done using dry backfill, which is also called dry screed. It will provide the room with additional sound and heat insulation. The advantage of this method of leveling the floor is that it can be performed at any time of the year, since there are no “wet” works during the backfill process.

Basic elements of dry backfill

Dry backfill consists of two main elements: the screed itself and the subfloor, which is most often mounted from gypsum-fiber-based canvases. Leveling and warming the floor with backfill can be done in stages. That is, having mounted the subfloor in one section of the room, furniture and other things are transferred to it, after which they proceed to backfilling the next zone.

Stages of work on the device of a dry screed

The work on the device of a dry screed is simple and its essence lies in the following algorithm: preparation of the base, placing beacons, filling, leveling, laying floor elements. During the preparatory stage, the floor is cleaned of debris, holes, cracks and potholes are filled with a cement-sand mortar. If the screed is laid after dismantling the old plank floor, there will certainly be a layer of sand under it. This is how soundproofing was done earlier. Before filling it will need to be removed.

After the floor has been cleaned and its flaws have been eliminated, they begin to lay the vapor barrier membrane. The canvases are laid so that they go 5-10 cm onto the walls above the level of the future floor. Using double-sided tape or a special edge tape, the edges of the membrane are attached to the walls along the entire perimeter of the room.

Then they begin to put up beacons. This is the most demanding work, on which the quality of installation of the subfloor directly depends. Before starting it, you need to prepare the dry screed itself (bulk material) and the leveling strip. Parallel to one of the walls, a narrow strip of screed is poured, and, stepping back from it, a distance that is slightly less than the length of the leveling rail, the second is poured. They continue to do this until they approach the opposite wall.

Further, the level of the subfloor is determined with a laser level and the beacons are aligned with the rail. After that, the gaps between the strips are covered with a dry screed so that it forms a flat plane. The loose material is lightly tamped, and only after that it is leveled in accordance with the beacons.

Now it is the turn of the installation of floor elements. They are gypsum fiber boards that are laid on a dry screed. If its height should be more than 10 cm, the backfill is carried out in two layers, each of which is leveled, and sheets of gypsum fiber board are laid between them. Upon completion of the installation of the subfloor elements, they are fastened together with self-tapping screws, and the joints of the plates are glued with sealing mastic. Now you can start laying the flooring (linoleum, laminate, carpet, etc.).
