Instructions

Step 1

Most often, the DVD drive stops working due to increased friction in the disc loading mechanism, wear of the drive belt, or a malfunction of the laser - the laser lens can become dirty, and the laser efficiency can also decrease. For repair, remove the drive from the system unit by disconnecting all cables from it.

Step 2

Take a thin wire or paper clip and insert the tip of the wire into the access hole under the drive's take-up tray to slide it out. Pull the tray out until it stops, and then release the fasteners on the front of the DVD drive.

Step 3

Pull the panel towards you, then unscrew the screws with a screwdriver and remove the remaining drive panels. Remove the fasteners that hold the tray to the main part of the structure.

Step 4

Take a brush and thoroughly dust the DVD drive mechanism, then remove any old grease residue with a clean piece of cloth. Apply fresh silicone grease to the desired parts of the mechanism, then replace the drive belt with a new one.

Step 5

Soak a piece of cloth in alcohol and gently wipe the surface of the new drive belt and drive mechanisms. Take a special cleaning cloth for the technique and wipe the dust off the laser lens.

Step 6

If necessary, you can adjust the laser current in the drive - to do this, start the drive without the front panel by installing a potentiometer on the laser carriage, which determines the magnitude of its current. Turn the current setting screw in one direction or the other while monitoring the read quality of the disc through Nero Disc Speed.

Step 7

When you find the discs read their best, leave the screw in the position it is in. Assemble the DVD drive by placing the front panel on it and close the system unit.
