Necessary

  • - lime;
  • - a scraper or rough cloth;
  • - secateurs;
  • - rotted manure;
  • - rake;
  • - a shovel.

Instructions

Step 1

Lilacs require little effort to plant. For this shrub, neutral soil is suitable. If your site has acidic soil, then you should treat it with dolomite flour or slaked lime. It is advisable to choose an even, sunny place for planting lilacs, then the bush will bloom more abundantly. This plant is frost-hardy, so it is not at all necessary to cover it for the winter. Damp and waterlogged soils are categorically contraindicated for growing lilacs.

Step 2

Lilac care consists in soil cultivation and weed removal. Every autumn, you should dig up the soil to a depth of 10-15 centimeters (near the root collar no more than 7 centimeters). Be careful not to damage the roots, as they are located almost on the surface of the ground. Leave the dug earth for the winter, do not level. In the spring, loosen the compacted soil with a rake, this contributes to the better development of lilacs and the retention of moisture. Remember to remove weeds in a timely manner.

Step 3

In May and early June, the lilac bush should be watered abundantly, as it begins to bloom, requiring a lot of moisture (do not overfill). From mid-July, watering must be completely stopped so as not to provoke the appearance of buds. It is best to apply fertilizers in the fall; rotted horse or cow manure is perfect for this.

Step 4

In early spring or late autumn, you should clean the lilac trunks with a scraper or a coarse rag from lichens, dead bark and moss (it is advisable to perform these manipulations in wet weather). After thorough cleaning, whitewash the shrub trunks with a lime solution. Very often in winter, mice inflict serious damage to the lilac root collars. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully trample the snow near the plant trunks, so you will make it difficult for the mice to access.

Step 5

Lilac pruning consists in removing faded inflorescences, pruning fatty shoots, and also preventing the growth of growth around the trunk. If the bush is too overgrown and has lost its former shape, you need to have time to cut off old and elongated branches, as well as branches directed inside the crown, before the buds swell. Thin the crown with a pruner in thickened areas and give it the desired shape.
