Blackleg is a cabbage disease that mainly affects seedlings growing in greenhouses or greenhouses. The first signs of the disease are darkening and curvature of the stem, then its thinning occurs, because of which the plant breaks down and dies. The causative agent of the "black leg" is soil fungi, the infection occurs exclusively through the soil.

Most often, this disease occurs on cabbage planted too close to each other. Excessive watering of seedlings and untimely airing of greenhouses can also provoke a disease. Most often, the disease manifests itself in small foci, over time these foci grow, affecting all seedlings.

Cabbage black leg: how to fight

To protect cabbage seedlings from this disease, it is necessary to properly care for it, namely:

- disinfect the soil;

- ensure normal temperature conditions;

- to prevent stagnation of water, as well as dryness of the soil;

- provide good nutrition;

- avoid thickening.

When planting cabbage in a greenhouse, it is necessary to carefully discard the seedlings: all representatives on which there are even the slightest signs of the disease are not suitable. As mentioned above, blackleg infection occurs exclusively through the soil, therefore, the main measures to combat the disease are disinfection or a complete change of land. Since land change is a rather laborious process, many gardeners more often disinfect the affected soil with a formalin solution. This drug has worked well in the fight against this infection.

For the prevention of disease, plants must be occasionally watered and sprayed with solutions with the addition of preparations from the sulfur group. A good option is colloidal sulfur (10 g per 10 liters of water). If the first foci of the disease are already visible on the seedlings, then it is better to use preparations containing metalaxyl, mefenocam or oxadixil.
