A water pump is a device that is necessary for the pool to function properly. Pumping structures help to prepare the pool for the winter period, heat the water, purify it, chlorinate it and perform many other functions.

Types of pumps

Structures that pump out water are used for several purposes at once: water purification, elimination of microbes and algae, etc. There are different types of techniques depending on the function:

  • filter pumps;
  • circulation pumps;
  • counter pumps;
  • structures for creating hydromassage systems;
  • submersible systems;
  • thermal.

Each species has its own advantages and disadvantages. To decide which pump is best to choose, you need to disassemble the features of each model.

Filter Pumps

Water filtration must be mandatory. If it is not carried out, then a greenish bloom will appear on the surface, algae, and bacteria will multiply. The pool will become more like a regular pond, and it will be difficult to constantly clean it of silt and other contaminants.

This type of pump absorbs water and passes it through a sand or paper type filter, and then releases the entire purified volume under pressure back into the reservoir. Such an installation is only suitable for cleaning from mechanical impurities. If it is necessary to eliminate germs and bacteria, it is necessary to additionally install equipment - an ozonizer. And if the purchase is too heavy for the budget, chemicals or chlorine can be used instead of a pump cleaner.

Circulating pumps

These installations provide a constant renewal of water flows. Thanks to them, large particles are removed from the water, the risk of algae formation is reduced. At the same time, the water looks clean and warms up evenly, and pumping out is almost silent.

Types of devices:

  • vortex;
  • centrifugal.

Centrifugals are faster and cost less, but can only draw water in one direction and should be used in smaller bodies of water. Vortex ones are distinguished by a more complex device and an increased price. They can take water in several directions at once, but they are more noisy. If you need an inexpensive device with quiet operation, it is better to take a centrifugal type.

Counter and hydromassage devices

Backpressure pumps pump water and release it under high pressure to create a current, fountain or waterfall. This is a decorative device.

Hydromassage pumps differ little from counteracting ones; such installations are based on a counteracting system. Water is also pumped out of the pool and discharged back into the pool pond under pressure, only a hydromassage nozzle is installed on top of the pump.

Submersible systems

Submersible pumps are lowered into the pool and pumped out of the water. Household installations can remove water up to 5-10 cm from the bottom of the reservoir, pumping is carried out in a few hours. And more professional ones leave only 1 cm, but such installations are needed mainly for public pools.

Such devices are used once a season to clean the pool for the winter or during maintenance work for cleaning. If you need to change all the water, completely clean the bottom or walls, resort to using submersible systems. The previously used filter is removed: when pumping out the water, dirt should not be sifted out, the design, on the contrary, is designed to accept particles as small as 5 cm, and passes various debris.

Thermal structures

There is a special gel inside the heat pumps. It absorbs heat from the outside and with its help heats the water, which moves through it. The technique works in the same way as for a refrigerator, only in the opposite direction - not cooling, but heating occurs.

Heating is required for indoor demi-season pools or outdoor summer ones.

How to choose a pump

The unit must be selected based on the volume of the pool and the functions that the device must perform. Let's analyze which models are suitable for what:

  • heat pump - good for indoor pools, but poorly copes with pollution. Copes well with the heating function;
  • submersible - used to pump out water when the pool stops operating, but cannot be used more than once a week;
  • filtering - you can install it together with a circulating one or purchase a 2in1 model, it is needed for pools of any size;
  • circulating - another mandatory attribute of the pool, which must be selected in accordance with the volume of water (the exact size of the reservoir is measured);
  • opposing - used for hydromassage, creating waves and waterfalls, therefore, it is used only for expensive pools.

It is also necessary to accurately calculate the pool volume in order to select a model. According to sanitary standards, a circulation pump must pass through itself at least 4 volumes of the pool per day. But for frame and inflatable pools, this figure is slightly higher - a quarter of the volume per hour or 6 volumes of the pool per day. In this case, all the water must be renewed, that is, it is necessary to mount the installation so that its pressure and suction elements cover the entire width or length of the reservoir. Conventional pumps of budget models have a head of 10 meters, if it is self-priming - a little less. This is enough even for the largest prefabricated reservoir.

Swimming pool cleaning filters

We must not forget about water purification. There are two filters for this: sand and paper.

Features of paper:

  • weighs less;
  • easy to replace;
  • serves only a month, so it has to be changed often;
  • cleans water from small particles, but can pass nanoparticles.

This option is suitable for pools that are not used very often. If there are more than 6 people in the family and they use the pond every day, it is better to purchase a more powerful device. It is worth thinking about purchasing a sand filter even if the pool is not located under a canopy, and various particles often get into it.

Sand filter features:

  • weighs a lot;
  • does not even allow nanoparticles to pass through;
  • replacement of the content should be carried out every 2-4 years.

The sand filter has more flow capacity. This product is for large pools and for buyers on a large budget.

Most popular pumps

Pumping structures can be purchased complete with a pool. This is the most popular option: frame or inflatable systems are often already equipped with their own device, designed just for the required volume of water. Companies that sell complete kits include Bestway and Intex. Below is an overview of them.

  • Intex is a Chinese brand. It is the market leader in small indoor pool equipment. The organization produces frame and inflatable pools, filters, pumps, chlorine generators and paper filter cartridges. Models from this company are designed to pump approximately 5600 liters of water per hour. They operate on a standard 220 W power supply and are lightweight. The filters, which are immediately built into the pump, contain either sand or paper. More often - paper. Thanks to the small volume of the filter, it is easy to install or carry, unlike professional models. This brand offers pumps of small and medium capacity, as well as chlorine generators that produce chlorine from ordinary table salt. Chlorine kills microbes, algae, cleans the water from the greenish tint and the typical smell of a natural reservoir. Up to 11 grams of chlorine is produced per hour, which, unlike pool chemicals, is completely safe.
  • Bestway, which sells inflatable and frame pools, uses the services of the Korean engineering organization Emaux. These manufacturers create designs that resemble Intex systems in appearance and performance. The maximum productivity is 13,000 liters per hour. No sand filters are used, only paper cartridges are used. You can replace them once a month, but in Intex you need them more often - 2-3 times a week.

It is difficult to choose between these two brands. The decision should be based on which pool you buy.

If you need more professional pumps that can create circulation for swimming pools, even for public use, then you need to turn to German, Spanish and other European brands:

  • Behncke is a German manufacturer. The models of this company operate on a voltage of 380 V, pass 32,000 liters of water per hour. The pumps are installed on a platform that allows the unit to be easily moved.
  • Kripsol is a Spanish company. It manufactures both small devices with paper cartridges and large sand machines. The largest pump weighs more than 100 kg, is filled with glass sand with a change rate of 3-4 years, operates on a voltage of 380 V. Kripsol passes 30 thousand liters of water per hour.

It is better to buy a pump after consulting the seller in a specialized store. It is quite difficult to find shops in the nearest availability, but choosing a suitable online store is much easier. Here you can order a consultation by phone, which will never be superfluous. According to your individual parameters, the consultant will select the optimal power of the device and the type of cleaning, carry out a comparative analysis of the models.
