Description of the variety

The Zhigulevskoe apple tree belongs to medium-sized varieties, grows up to 3 m. The crown is pyramidal or spherical, not very thickened, facilitates easy penetration of sunlight. The leaves are oval in shape with a pointed tip and a bright green color. The trunk and branches are dark brown, the shoots are raised upward. The flowers are white and large. It starts flowering early, when frost is still possible. During this period, gardeners should protect the apple tree in order to preserve the flowers.

This variety belongs to large-fruited, the weight of apples is from 120 to 250 grams. The fruit is round in shape with a strong skin, yellowish-red in color, stripes and spots are visible on the surface. The pulp is creamy with a sweet and sour taste and a coarse-grained structure. Harvesting begins in late August - early September. 2 weeks after harvest, the taste of the apples is sweeter. The yield is high, a tree can give up to 240 kg in 5-7 years after planting, the first harvest can already be removed for 4 years. The calorie content of the fruit is low, only 55 kcal per 100 g.

The apple tree belongs to the self-fertile varieties. For fruit setting to take place, she needs a pollinator. For pollination, it is recommended to plant next to such varieties as Antonovka ordinary, Kuibyshevskoe, Spartak, Northern Sinap, Anis gray, Kutuzovets and others. The distance between trees should not be more than 50 m. Ideally, if there are hives in the garden or nearby, then pollinating trees are not required.

Landing

It is recommended to purchase one- or two-year-old seedlings from specialized stores. When choosing a seedling, you should pay attention to the root system. It should be healthy and firm, preferably covered with a clay mash and at least 30 cm long. The grafting site is covered with bark and smoothed. Before planting, soak the seedlings in water for a day, then remove dry and damaged roots.

Planting can be done in spring or autumn. Chernozem, loamy and sandy loam soils are best suited. The place should be sunny and sheltered from the wind. The absence of groundwater is desirable.

The landing pit should be prepared in advance. For planting, dig a hole with a depth of at least 80 cm and a diameter of 100 cm. Loosen the bottom of the hole by 15-20 cm. The top layer of soil is mixed with peat, manure, wood ash and potash fertilizer. Stones or broken bricks are laid at the bottom of the pit for drainage, then 2/3 of the soil with fertilizers is poured with a mound. A seedling is placed on the mound so that the root collar is 5-7 cm above the soil level. A wooden peg is driven in next to it, burnt at one end. Sprinkle the seedling with the remaining earth, and tie it to a peg. It is abundantly watered with warm water and mulched with humus or peat, if planting in autumn, then additionally covered with heat-insulating material.

Apple tree care

The apple tree requires regular watering, preferably in the morning or evening, at least 3-4 buckets per tree. During the season, 4 waterings are carried out: before bud break, during flowering, before harvest and in late autumn.

After watering, the soil is loosened and, if necessary, mulched, for air access.

In the second year of planting, you can trim the crown. Remove all dry and damaged branches, form a crown suitable for harvesting fruits. Pruning is done in early spring. Cut to the very base, after the cut, process with garden pitch.

The apple tree begins to be fertilized 3 years after planting, at least 3 times per season. To strengthen the apple tree and increase yields, it is recommended to use organic and mineral fertilizers. The first feeding is done in the spring with nitrogen-containing fertilizers (humus, ammonium nitrate, urea). As soon as flowering has begun, they are fed a second time with superphosphate, mullein, bird droppings. The last feeding follows in the fall, before wintering.

The apple tree is resistant to many diseases and pests. To prevent damage, it is recommended:

  • Carry out preventive measures to protect against the moth: remove fallen leaves and fruits, dig up the soil, clean the bark, spraying with a solution of wormwood, setting traps.
  • In the spring, whitewashing of the trunks is required to protect against burns.
  • In case of damage with powdery mildew, treat with preparations "Topaz" and "Skor".
  • To protect against hares and rodents, before winter the tree is tied with roofing material, pine branches or a protective net.
