Plywood is a material prone to drying out and cracking. This is due to its structure: the sheets consist of veneer sheets glued together. Plywood is best protected by painting with acrylic or oil paints.

How to treat plywood before painting?

If plywood sheets were stored in high humidity conditions, such material, as a rule, deforms slightly and swells. Before painting, it must be dried, but this must be done correctly. Plywood will need to be laid on two bars so that it is at least 10 cm away from the ground or floor. Then, a load must be placed on those edges that rest on the bars. It can be boards or other lumber. After the plywood is dry and straightened, its surface is carefully sanded.

A primer with antiseptic additives is used to treat dried canvases. It will prevent blue stains, mildew and mildew from developing. The following formulations can be used: EK GS400 ANTISEPTIC, GLIMS Prime HYDROSEPT, Unis. All these primers have the ability to penetrate deeply into the treated surface, while disinfecting it. For plywood that has not been exposed to moisture, you can use any acrylic and water-based primer. If it is not possible to buy a primer, you can cover the plywood with natural drying oil.

A brush or roller can be used to apply the primer. The surface of the plywood must be thoroughly cleaned of dust and dirt, and only then the solution should be applied. It is advisable to cover the canvases in 2-3 layers, which will ensure the penetration of the primer into the smallest pores. If you decide to use a roller, it is better to take one so that there are no seams on its fur coat, and the pile is short. The ends of the canvases should be processed with a thin brush, trying to apply uniform strokes.

If it is not possible to use drying oil or deep penetration primer, you can paint the plywood immediately after sanding and dust removal. There are enamels that are designed for painting untreated wood. For example, PF-266. Stir the paint thoroughly before use and add a small amount of turpentine or white spirit to it. If the surface to be painted has not been previously primed, apply 2 coats of paint. The first one - strokes in one direction, the second - perpendicular to the previous one. This will protect the entire surface of the canvases.
