Garden strawberries, popularly called strawberries, are a favorite garden culture for many people. It is recommended to grow garden strawberries in one place for four years. After this period, the berries begin to shrink, they become more susceptible to attack by pests, so it is better to uproot the bushes and start planting strawberries on another plot. However, within four years it is necessary to ensure that the strawberries overwinter successfully. This can be done in various ways.

When preparing for planting garden strawberries, choose frost-resistant varieties. Don't be tempted by pictures in glossy catalogs with foreign varieties. As a rule, these plants are designed for a much milder climate. It is better to choose garden strawberries bred by Russian breeders. For example, the Festivalnaya strawberry variety is a frequent visitor to the beds of Russian summer residents. Bred in the fifties of the last century, this berry has no competitors in winter hardiness.

In late July - early August, start feeding your garden strawberries with fertilizers containing phosphorus (superphosphate) and potassium (potassium sulfate). This will increase the frost resistance of plants by several degrees.

In late summer, be sure to trim the mustache of the shrub. Also, yellowed leaves should be removed from old three to four year old plants. If you want to get shoots, it is better to allocate a separate bed for this, where you plant mother plants. You can leave a mustache with them, but you should regularly remove the flower stalks.

In late August or early September, garden strawberries must be hilled. This promotes the formation of adventitious roots, and thanks to their presence, the plants tolerate winter much better. After hilling, deep loosening of the row spacings should be carried out.

In the fall, cover all plantings with a thick layer of wood shavings. The sawdust layer should be at least 10 centimeters. On a garden strawberry plantation, sheltered in this way, the plants can survive even a snowless winter.
