Bathroom ceiling requirements

Simple solutions are often not suitable for a specific room such as a bathroom. You need to choose a ceiling for it in accordance with the following requirements:

  1. The ceiling must be made of waterproof materials, otherwise evaporation and water splashes will inevitably ruin the coating. In addition, water-resistant surfaces will be better able to withstand a sudden rush from above if neighbors accidentally flood the room.
  2. It is better to choose ceilings that are easy to care for. Ideally, it will be sufficient to wipe the surface 1-2 times a month. This is especially important for rooms in which sensitive plumbing and household appliances are installed that interfere with frequent cleaning.
  3. The chosen ceiling must satisfy the buyer from an aesthetic point of view. There is a wide variety of options on sale, so you shouldn't dwell solely on the simplest and most practical solution. It is important to take into account the colors, design of the ceiling and the peculiarities of its installation, so that the coating ultimately matches the overall interior of the bathroom.

Taking into account the listed requirements, it is better to immediately discard such an option as putty and ceiling painting. Such a solution was previously almost always used in Soviet apartments, however, such ceilings quickly deteriorate under the influence of high levels of humidity, and their aesthetic qualities leave much to be desired. The best solution would be to install a false ceiling made of a specific material.

Plastic PVC Panels

Their PVC stretch ceiling is one of the most popular solutions for furnishing modern bathrooms. This is a fairly durable and moisture resistant coating that looks quite nice and can be installed without the involvement of third-party specialists. The surface is practically not contaminated, therefore it requires only periodic wiping with a damp cloth. PVC is conveniently cut into rectangular panels. In addition, spotlights can be installed in it without any problems.

The disadvantages of plastic PVC panels are as follows:

  1. Over time, dirt can penetrate into panel joints, which is not always convenient, especially if the bathroom is spacious enough. And with poor ventilation in the room, a fungus can form in the cracks, which will be much more difficult to get rid of.
  2. The metal frame of such structures is capable of rusting over time. In this regard, it is recommended to additionally purchase a protective galvanized coating, however, it does not always save the situation, especially if the room does not have very good ventilation and high humidity.
  3. If you want to update the coating or repair its individual sections, you will have to dismantle the entire surface.

Rack ceiling

The assembly of slatted ceilings is carried out using a special frame. Slats are long, narrow panels made of plastic, steel or aluminum. The best option would be aluminum structures that are water resistant and do not corrode. Rack ceilings are available in a variety of colors, so you can choose chrome, gilded, multi-colored or monochrome solutions. Installation of slatted ceilings does not present any difficulties: they are assembled according to the type of a constructor. In addition, they are virtually maintenance-free.

A separate advantage of slatted structures is that they are flexible enough, as a result of which both straight ceilings and surfaces with bends can be created. At the same time, the slats have a polished surface, which, when reflected by light, looks almost mirrored. Among the minuses, one can single out the clogging of interpanel seams with dirt, which is standard for prefabricated structures. In addition, it is best to install slatted ceilings in fairly spacious rooms with a complex design.

Plasterboard ceiling

Plasterboard surfaces are installed on a metal or wooden frame. The first option becomes the only preferred one for bathrooms. The frame itself is stitched with sheets of moisture-resistant drywall with special protective additives against fungus and moisture accumulations. The finished structure is called "moisture resistant gypsum plasterboard" or "GKLV". Sheets are usually produced in green, which indicates the high quality of the material and its resistance to high humidity.

The use of plasterboard sheets allows you to decorate the bathroom in an original way. For example, you can create a tiered ceiling by uniquely positioning the luminaires inside the frame. The latter also allows you to hide any flaws and irregularities, as well as wiring and ventilation communications. The result is a beautiful and durable surface that will last at least 5-10 years.

One way or another, plasterboard ceilings also have certain disadvantages:

  1. The purchase of materials and their installation will cost a fairly large amount: the sheets need to be cut and fastened, and then additionally treated with a primer, putty and painting.
  2. Installing plasterboard ceilings is time consuming and often requires additional labor.
  3. Periodically, the outer coating will have to be updated, otherwise it will lose its attractive and bright appearance. Along with this work, periodic washing is also added in order to prevent the accumulation of dirt on the joint seams.

Tiled suspended ceiling

Tiled ceiling is an inexpensive and easy-to-install option constructed from pre-fabricated cladding sheets (suspended ceiling tiles). Such a surface, unlike, for example, plasterboard does not require priming and staining, which can be attributed to the undoubted advantages. Tiles from a variety of materials can be found on sale, including moisture resistant plastic, metal or plexiglass modules, as well as mineral slabs. Ready-made designs with built-in lighting look very nice.

The disadvantage of tiled suspended structures is that the ceilings of the cellular or cassette type do not always fit well into the interior of the bathroom and the entire apartment as a whole. This is a rather cold and officious outwardly option that can break the feeling of coziness and comfort. An exception is the complete tiling of the entire room.

Mirrored ceiling

The use of mirror materials is the most sophisticated option for decorating the ceiling in the bathroom. To install the tensioning structure, you will need to pre-install a reinforced metal frame. Holes are drilled on the frame rails for fixing the tiles with a mirror surface. All this can turn into a lot of complications:

  1. Mirror tiles are a very expensive material. The installation of such a ceiling will also be expensive: it is almost impossible to do it yourself, and a team of experienced workers will be required.
  2. A mirrored ceiling is very fragile and will always require extra care in the room.
  3. With poor ventilation in the room, the surface will constantly fog up;
  4. Dirt particles quickly adhere to the mirror, which makes weekly cleaning of the ceiling inevitable;
  5. A mirrored ceiling can be uncomfortable for some people, as well as dazzling under intense bathroom lighting.

Nevertheless, if you want to create a truly sophisticated design in the room, you can still decide to install a mirrored ceiling. A plus will be the availability on sale of budget analogs of the design, the cost of which is several times lower than that of the classic options. This includes various polished surfaces made of plastic or plexiglass, which are also easier to install.

Thus, the choice of materials for creating a ceiling in a bathroom is a very responsible matter, and you should not rush it. First, it is best to draw up a general plan for the design of the room, taking into account the materials used for cladding the floor and walls, as well as the features of the placement of plumbing and other structures. The quality of ventilation and lighting is essential. Already in the future, you can begin to study the market for ceiling structures and eventually dwell on those that will become optimal for the proposed repair work.
