Gas holders are special tanks for storing liquefied natural gas. In the form of large above-ground tanks, gasholders are used at large chemical plants. Small underground reservoirs are used to supply gas to summer cottages and private houses.

Autonomous supply of gas at home using a gas holder

Next to the house it is necessary to dig a pit to place the gas tank. For a full-fledged heating and electricity supply at home, a container with a size of 2,000 to 20,000 liters is required. For safety reasons, the gas tank is located at a distance of 10 m from residential buildings and at a distance of 15 m or more from the water intake. The tank should be located just below the freezing depth of the soil so that the liquefied gas does not freeze.

Liquefied gas obtained by cooling is 600 times smaller in volume than natural gas and contains almost no sulfur compounds.

From the neck of the gas holder, gas is piped through the pipes to the kitchen stove, boiler room and gas generator. The gas is fed into the pipes by natural evaporation. After passing through a reducer that maintains a constant pressure of 30-50 mbar, the gas enters the pipeline with wiring to the gas equipment. Refueling of the tank is carried out at the request of the consumer using special gas carriers.

Pros and cons of a gas tank

Stationary storage tanks of liquefied gas are appropriate to use in remote places where there are no gas pipelines and power lines. The gas holder compares favorably with diesel heating in low toxicity, cleanliness in use and ease of operation. The absence of a centralized gas supply allows avoiding the problems associated with the pressure drop in the main pipeline. Liquefied gas is more efficient than diesel and natural gas.

When working with a gas holder, boiler equipment will last longer, since there are almost no sulfur compounds in the evaporated gas that can enter into a chemical reaction with the metal of the pipes.

The autonomous gas supply system will allow you to start and end the heating season at any convenient time. In case of power outages, the owners of the gas holder have the opportunity to connect a gas electric generator. In the event of a leak from the gasholder, the fuel does not remain in the soil, but evaporates freely, without causing any harm to the plants of the site and people.

The disadvantages of the gas tank include the high cost of equipping the house with an autonomous gas supply system. It includes not only the price of an underground reservoir, but also the cost of digging a pit, laying pipes, and all gas equipment. In severe winters, gas supply problems are possible due to freezing of fuel in the gas tank.
