A material such as foam is a foamed structure, the bulk of which is air. The high sound and thermal insulation properties of the foam are due to the presence of a large amount of gas in its structure. Foam boards are unstable to the effects of paint and varnish coatings and nitro paints, therefore, before starting work with it, you need to study the information about how the foam is glued to each other and to other surfaces.

In construction and design, polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene foam plates are most often used, which have different densities depending on the type and method of processing.

Scope of foam plastic

Polyfoam is a versatile heat-insulating and sound-insulating material widely used in construction. It is very often used to insulate the walls of a house, both from the inside and from the outside. The compartments of small vessels are also filled with foam plastic plates, which significantly increases their buoyancy. This material is indispensable in medicine, where it is used for the manufacture of containers used for the transportation of donor organs.

Such types of polystyrene as penoplex, polystyrene concrete and polytherm are used for the production of decorative elements intended for interior and exterior decoration of premises.

Foam boards vary in density and stiffness. It is from these characteristics that you need to build on when choosing an adhesive for foam.

If the foam material is used as a heater for the exterior walls of the house, then its fastening and gluing is carried out using facade glue with high frost resistance, adhesive mixtures intended for ceramic decoration, and silicone sealant. Construction liquid nails and even wall putty are also used. The choice of glue in this case is not fundamental, the main thing is that it contains no acetone, gasoline and other organic solvents that adversely affect polystyrene foam. To increase the service life, the foam is additionally attached to the facade using dowels with mushrooms or umbrellas.

Water from water-based glue evaporates poorly, which adversely affects the strength of the connection. Therefore, gypsum, which quickly absorbs moisture, must be introduced into it.

You can use glue or liquid nails to glue the foam together. To do this, at least five cakes of glue are applied to the sheet along its entire plane. It can be four corners and a center point.

Often, polystyrene plates are placed in a supporting frame. In this case, it is held together with an adhesive mixture. If the material is used in the construction of two-layer thermal insulation, it can be glued with liquid nails, mastic, moment-installation, a mixture for ceramic tiles or silicone sealant.

When using an adhesive mixture, remember that you need to dilute it in water immediately before use. Otherwise, it will lose all its properties.

The wall to which the styrofoam is to be glued must be free of dirt and dust. In addition, cracks and chips will need to be repaired on it. And only after that, the wall is coated with a prepared adhesive mixture. Then the same mixture is applied to a sheet of styrofoam, after which it is applied to the wall.
