When repairing residential, utility, auxiliary or office premises, the installation of stretch ceilings takes a leading position by no coincidence. The use of such structures allows you to significantly save the budget allocated for repairs and avoid many time-consuming, highly polluting work.

However, having given preference to tension structures, it is important to familiarize yourself with all their advantages and disadvantages before buying, and you should also pay close attention to the choice of the type of ceiling covering.

Types of stretch ceilings: fundamental differences

Stretch ceilings can be conditionally divided into two fundamentally different categories, distinguished by the type of canvases: seamless and with the use of a weld.

The first category includes fabrics made of synthetic fabric impregnated with a liquid polyurethane compound. Such ceilings are distinguished by their characteristic texture and have a noble matte surface. The advantages of these canvases include the following factors:

  • the fabric is produced in rolls with a width of about 5 m, which avoids the seam connection of two fabrics;
  • installation is carried out without the use of powerful heating devices, as a result of which there is no need for preliminary removal of furniture and items that are unstable to temperature influences from the room;
  • fabric canvases are particularly durable, resistant to sharp objects and for this reason can be used in children's rooms, where there is always a possibility of deformation of the coating due to active games;
  • seamless ceilings can be used at both positive and negative temperatures, are suitable for rooms with high humidity, do not absorb kitchen odors, and are fireproof.

The biggest drawback of such ceiling structures is their price: on average, the cost of a high-quality canvas starts at 800 rubles. per sq. m, but to this amount it will also be necessary to add the costs of installation work and the cost of a plastic molding, with the help of which the canvas is fixed.

In addition to the price, the disadvantages of fabric ceilings can be attributed to the assortment of colors: as a rule, such canvases are produced either in white or in soft pastel colors.

After the installation work, the ceiling can be painted in any color using latex paints, but this requires professional painting skills.

Inexpensive fabrics may have such a feature as the presence of polyurethane impregnation on only one side of the canvas: this disadvantage can manifest itself in the event of a large amount of water leaking from the neighbors from above: the color of the ceiling may fade, or ugly stains and stains will appear on it.

PVC foil ceilings

Domestic and foreign canvases made of shrink film are usually produced in rolls with a width of about 2 m. For this reason, the installation of a stretch ceiling is carried out by welded connection of separate cuts. Advantages of stretch PVC structures:

  • a huge range of films of various colors and textures;
  • relatively low price;
  • quick installation in the complete absence of construction dust and debris;
  • the ability to create multi-level structures with a combination of various types of film;
  • creation of individual design solutions using photo printing;
  • the ability to withstand a significant volume of water without damage when flooded by neighbors;
  • long service life without loss of visual appeal.

Disadvantages of film stretch ceilings

Having opted for a PVC ceiling, it is important to remember that the use of such canvases is unacceptable in too hot or unheated rooms, where the temperature can cause deformation of the film. For the same reason, it is recommended to pay special attention to the installation of lighting devices - lamps that are too powerful or lamps close to the surface of the canvas can melt the film.

If the stretch ceiling is used in small rooms, the "greenhouse" effect is possible: unlike the fabric, the film does not allow air to pass through, as a result of which excessive humidity may appear in the apartment.

Also, one of the significant disadvantages of film ceilings is their low fire safety: when ignited, the film not only instantly lights up, but also emits carbon monoxide, which has a negative effect on the health of people and animals.

When buying inexpensive PVC sheets, there is a risk of purchasing low-grade material that can cause allergic attacks. Currently, the products of French, Italian, Belgian and German production have proven themselves well.

Features of stretch ceilings care

With proper operation, stretch ceiling structures can serve for quite a long time without the need for specific maintenance. It must be remembered that film ceilings are easily damaged by careless handling. When washing the film, do not use abrasive materials, hard brushes and aggressive cleaning agents or solvents.

To care for a glossy surface, it is recommended to use industrial glass cleaners or ordinary water with the addition of ammonia, after which the canvas must be wiped dry with slight horizontal movements - this will avoid the appearance of unaesthetic stains and streaks.

Stretch fabric ceilings can be cleaned with a soft-bristled furniture brush or a vacuum cleaner with a special textile attachment. To avoid deformation of the coating, it is recommended to set the power of the vacuum cleaner to the minimum value. It is better to exclude wet cleaning of fabric ceilings altogether or use it in exceptional cases, when particularly strong contamination is detected.
