Most often, we grow garlic like this: planted a clove in the fall - got a head in August. But garlic is a two-year culture. It is surprisingly unpretentious when grown according to its nature.

The undoubted plus of annual garlic plantings is commonplace. Easily plan where and what will be planted. An obvious disadvantage is that the planting material is gradually degenerating. Many gardeners regret to bury the best specimens in the ground, especially if the previous harvest did not please.

When growing winter garlic, we leave a few heads to control the timing of ripening. The cap is cracked - the seeds are ready. You can scoop up the garlic and use it as you like.

Growing garlic from seeds takes 2 years, but requires very little effort. And the benefits are enormous. When sowing garlic with bulbs from autumn, we get from only one garden bed:

  • greens for salad next spring,
  • one-tooth onions for food and for pickling in the middle of the first summer,
  • greens and one-tooth for food in the spring of the second year,
  • full harvest of excellent heads of garlic in August of the second year.

The crop of tomatoes from the same garden in the first year of growing garlic from seeds will also be taken into account.

In the garden, you can use the methods of natural farming: sowing siderates, mulching, mixed planting. Growing garlic from seeds is very easy. No digging, loosening or replanting required. Covered with a layer of mulch, garlic hardly needs watering at all. The seeds do not need to be stored. Even additional space in the garden is not required.

Stage 1. Autumn, sowing

In September-October, we clear the garden bed that was free from the previous harvest, we loosen the ground with a hoe shallowly. We mark grooves no more than 5-7 cm deep at a distance of 20-25 centimeters from one another. We sow garlic with bulbs more often. In the same furrow we sow white mustard as a green fertilizer. The mustard will rise in a few days and will build up the green mass until the very frosts. You do not need to mow or pluck it. Winter will come, and mustard will cover the garlic bed, forming a natural mulch without assistance.

Stage 2. Spring, seedlings, planting

In spring, garlic begins to sprout almost immediately from under the snow. Some of it can be used with herbs in salad.

The soil remains covered with a layer of last year's greenery. When the threat of frost has passed, we make small holes with a scoop and plant tomatoes, peppers or eggplants in one row in the center of the garden in a garden bed with garlic. Perfectly illuminated by the sun from all sides, the vegetables produce an excellent harvest.

During the summer, an unusual bed only needs watering. When the garlic sprouts begin to turn yellow and wither, you can dig up the one-tooth onions for eating or pickling.

Stage 3. Autumn, harvesting

In the fall, the vegetables are harvested. The sprouts of garlic died in the summer. Leave the bushes in the garden, let them trap the snow. Cover the bed with fallen leaves during the fall.

Stage 4. Spring, seedlings, harvesting

We remove the bushes of last year's vegetable crops from the garden. We remove excess garlic, leaving 15-20 centimeters between the plants in a row. Add fresh mulch several times during the summer. We water as needed, but without fanaticism. Let us pamper the plants with herbal tea 3-4 times per season. Let's leave a few arrows for flowering.

Stage 5. Harvesting

In August, we take out the garlic from the garden. We remove the seeds for a new sowing.

The bed is ready to use, no additional fertilization is required. You can immediately sow fast crops into it - radishes, greens, Chinese cabbage or daikon. You can also use it for winter crops.
