A bio fireplace is a safe option for decorating any home. You can make it yourself from available tools. At home, biofuel is also prepared, which allows you to get a fire without burning, soot and the release of toxic substances.

Biofireplace
Biofireplace

Biofireplace does not require a chimney and construction work. The special fuel is safe and does not emit toxic substances. If you decide to install this type of decorative heating, first decide on its type.

Portable - a small imitation of a fireplace, in which the fire is behind glass. Wall types are made of metal, easily attached to load-bearing walls or partitions. Floor-standing types are presented in the largest variety of sizes. Most often represented by angular types. Eco fireplaces can be used in country houses, apartments or in the country.

Preparation: purchasing materials

Despite the seeming simplicity and minimal set of materials, purchased options are expensive. Therefore, many people prefer to make fireplaces on their own. You can buy all the necessary materials in any building salon or online store. You will need several items.

Glass

The quantity and size is determined according to the design. It doesn't have to be subtle. Check in advance the degree of heat resistance. The most suitable type is fireproof. You can opt for a complete set of metal frame with hinges, a door with a glass unit. You can purchase a decorated type with forged elements or ornaments.

Silicone compound for seams

The mixture must be heat resistant. On sale you can find options in special containers or tubes with a gun. Ready-made pastes are relevant for home use. Two-component formulations are popular with craftsmen, but certain rules must be followed when mixing.

Silicone sealants are flexible. Choose one that contains iron oxide particles. This increases the resistance to hot air. For fireplaces, it is better to use neutral compounds that do not emit acids when dried

Burner

The fuel tank for the bio fireplace is a container suitable for burning alcohol. It is possible to purchase a unit that is electronically regulated, but during installation you will have to take into account more various factors. You can make a burner yourself, any small metal container is suitable for this.

To minimize the likelihood of a fire, choose a species that has a double bottom. Ready-made options are often equipped with a special damper, with which the degree of combustion is regulated.

Metal mesh cut

Give preference to species with small cells. This material should be enough to make two layers. The mesh should be metal, strong, without additional treatment with paint or other coatings. During the heating process, they can become a source of emission of harmful substances.

Metal box

It is used as a base. In terms of size, he should advise the glass body. If you don't want to buy a box, you can make it from barbecue grates, building mesh, baking sheet (needed for the base).

Additional materials

Materials will be required for decoration. You can add large pebbles, decorate with composite materials. An excellent option would be an ordinary stone brought from the street.

Artificial wood is sometimes used. Natural wood should not be used as it can catch fire. Artificial species are often ceramic. They are painted in the desired colors. Additionally, you can use knots or cones. Modern dummies are coated with fire retardant varnish.

You will need drywall if you decide to hide the metal box under the decoration. Heat-resistant types are suitable for all types of fireplaces. Purchase them in any hardware store.

Drawing up drawings

Without them, it is impossible to make a fireplace yourself. The sketch is first created with a pencil so that you can clearly see the finished result. When the sketch is done, it becomes possible to assess your strength. The drawing is done with all dimensions. Thanks to this plan, it will be easy to navigate in the manufacture of all parts. The sketch indicates:

  • length and width;
  • location of glass and burner;
  • basic proportions.

Subtleties to consider when drawing up a project

The quality of the glass used as a partition must be taken into account. If you are using a conventional one without heat-resistant characteristics, it should be located at a sufficient distance from the burner. Otherwise, it can crack quite quickly. The distance should be at least 15 cm. But the masters still do not recommend experimenting with ordinary glass.

The fuel tank is made of metal with a thickness of 2 mm. Thinner steel sheets can deform when exposed to high temperatures, which negatively affects the reliability of the entire installation. For added security, such a unit is purchased from a store.

The drawings take into account the dimensions of the burner and the number of such elements. If the room is large, and the biofireplace is used not only for decorative purposes, then several such elements can be installed. One burner can heat up to 15-16 sq. m. But it is better not to do too many such elements.

If you decide to make your own burner, use any metal container. In this case:

  • When creating open biofireplaces, decorating a container is simple - paint it in the desired color. Leave the inside without finishing, otherwise the finishing material will burn.
  • A metal mesh is laid on top and fixed. If the cells are large, take several pieces and put them on top of each other. The strength of such a mesh is important, since stones or other decorative elements will be laid on it.
  • The bottom of the container with the mesh is connected with a wick. If it remains a little visible, there is nothing to worry about. The decorative elements will hide it anyway.

Fireplace assembly technology

To make the base, you need a metal box. If it is not there, you can use heat-resistant drywall, metal profile, self-tapping screws 8 bolts, thin soft gaskets, rubber gaskets. If the box is not prepared, use black fire retardant paint or special coating.

If a wall view is made, then marking lines are outlined on the wall, to which you need to attach the guides for the case. Thanks to self-tapping screws, profiles and a frame are installed. Check with a plumb bob that all elements are correctly positioned.

If you intend to use drywall for sheathing the frame, the time is right for these works. The optimal distance at which it should be fastened is 10-15 cm. When performing such work, you need to lay a layer of mineral wool with a thickness of 5 cm. To make the rack reliable and durable, use special jumpers.

Plasterboard is best mounted on a metal box, but the bottom should be left open. After that, the upper part is screwed on, the edges are treated with a silicate solution.

Eight holes are drilled on the glass, which should fit the size of the bolts. With their help, the glass is attached to the manufactured block. Drilling must be done carefully so that cracks do not go. If you do not have a special drill at hand, let the master do this work.

The optimal dimensions of the lower part are 16.5 cm. In the middle there is a block for fuel and burner, the upper part of the glass is 25 cm. On the panel, mark the places where the glass will be fixed. Make holes. Bots with soft pads are pushed through them. From the inside of the frame, fasten it using washers. Do not tighten them too tightly, otherwise the glass will crack.

Finishing instructions

It remains to attach the legs. They can be plastic or metal. When choosing a material, it is better to give preference to one that can withstand the weight of the resulting fireplace for a long time. Put rubber pads on the bottom. When the structure is ready, a metal container is installed in it under the firebox and the fuel block.

When all the work is done, the seams are carefully rubbed, the surface is wiped with a rag. After that, start decorating. Add a burner, lay out decorative items. The first launch is carried out according to the rules. First remove the decoration mesh. You will have to do this every time you fill the tank with fuel. The latter should be 2/3 of the capacity.

The finished equipment is covered with a grate and set on fire. If the technique is performed correctly, a blue flame will appear. Refueling of the burner is carried out after complete burnout of the fuel.

What to use as fuel?

Eco fireplace is heated with bioethanol, which is environmentally friendly. When burning, the raw material is not a source of unpleasant odor, does not smoke and does not leave traces. These biofuels are sold in hardware stores or salons with pre-built fireplaces.

If you decide to make biofuels wealthy at home, you need:

  • Buy gasoline and medical alcohol.
  • Mix the components of the alcohol solution so that the gasoline is 10%.
  • Shake the liquid well, pour into the fuel tank.

The composition in a volume of one liter, made in an industrial environment, is enough for 2-5 hours of burning. A self-made mixture is consumed in approximately 100 ml per 1 hour. In the first minutes of burning homemade fuel, you can smell alcohol, but it quickly dissipates.

Rules and principles for handling a fireplace made with your own hands

Safety precautions must be followed so that the fireplace does not cause a fire:

  1. Fuel can only be poured into a completely cooled fireplace. If you accidentally spill the compound on the floor, try to wipe it off immediately with a rag.
  2. Special lighters are used for ignition. With the use of conventional ones, there is a high probability of getting burned.
  3. The liquid itself must be stored at a sufficient distance from the fireplace, out of the reach of children and animals.
  4. Installation of the finished product should take place in places where there is less likelihood of fire.
  5. The tabletop hearth is located away from heating appliances.
  6. If you have chronic respiratory diseases, consult your doctor if the fumes from the fuel will be harmful to you.

In conclusion, we note that you can purchase ready-made refractory decorative elements. This will create the complete illusion of a real fireplace. Specially selected fuels can generate small amounts of steam. When buying special mixtures, it becomes possible to choose a type in which the flame will have different shades. This will allow you to get a beautiful effect and home comfort in any room.
