Tomato seedlings need to be picked in the phase of two true leaves. Approximately 15-20 days after germination. It is necessary to carry out a pick in a timely manner, since tomatoes do not like tightness and respond to this by slowing down their growth.

How to prepare tomato seedlings for picking

Stop watering the seedlings a couple of days before the pick. If this is neglected, it will be problematic to remove the seedlings from the ground. As a result, the root system will receive significant damage, which is highly undesirable at this stage of plant development.

Prepare containers. Their volume must be at least 300 ml. For dwarf tomato varieties, you can take a smaller container.

You can use both individual cups and boxes. In any case, they must necessarily have drainage holes through which excess moisture will leave. Experienced gardeners recommend using opaque containers. One of the ideal options is good old peat pots.

If you decide to plant tomatoes in clear plastic cups, wrap them in dark cloth or black plastic wrap. Otherwise, unwanted neighbors - algae - may appear on the walls. In addition, the roots of tomatoes in a transparent container can burn the sun.

If you have been using containers from last year, wash them well with water and laundry soap. You can use baking soda for disinfection.

Pick tomatoes: step by step instructions

  1. Prepare the ground. It should be light and nutritious. Fill the containers with soil and make a hole in them so that you can deepen the plant to the cotyledon leaves - the lowest ones that appeared first.
  2. Gently pry the tomato seedling with a teaspoon and trim the roots with scissors, literally by a millimeter. This must be done in order to stimulate the growth and development of the roots. For this purpose, many gardeners use root formers, for example, "Kornevin".
  3. Place the seedling in the hole without shaking the soil from its roots. Deepen to the leaves and compact the soil. Top up the soil if necessary. Pour lukewarm water over the cut tomatoes. You can add to it "Epin", "Zircon" or other similar "antistress" for plants. Please note that when using "Epin", seedlings should not be watered at the root, but sprayed. Since this drug does not work through the soil.

How to care for tomato seedlings after a pick

For the first couple of days in the room where the picked plants are located, keep the temperature around 20-22 ° C during the day and 15-18 ° C at night. The temperature difference can be achieved by periodically opening the window for ventilation.

Seedlings need a week to "come to their senses" and take root after a dive. After that, you can safely lower the temperature to 18 ° C during the day and 15 ° C at night.

10 days after the pick, the tomato seedlings begin to grow intensively in the root system. During this period, she needs good lighting. If the daylight hours are even less than 12 hours, be sure to use additional lighting. For this, not only phytolamps are suitable, but also LED or fluorescent ones. Place the supplementary light at a height of about 20-25 cm from the tops of the seedlings.

Subsequent care is reduced to watering, feeding and gradual accustoming to fresh air.
