Family onions are a real find for those who want to simultaneously grow onions on a feather and get bulbs in the fall. The family onion gets its name from the fact that the bulbs grow several at a time. In Russia, it is undeservedly little common, although this variety is highly appreciated abroad and there they achieved excellent yields.

Family onions are appreciated by chefs all over the world due to their juiciness, compactness, and aroma. In terms of its taste, it is close to sweet varieties. Onions are widely used in French, Swiss and English cuisine. Another familiar name for this onion is shallots.

Shallot benefits

Family onions are superior to onions in a number of qualities. It is more cold-resistant, has a greater keeping quality. At the same time, the onion ripens quickly enough. Russian gardeners fell in love with shallots due to the fact that the bulbs are not spicy and medium-sized, 1-2 can be used without a trace

What does it look like?

The shape of the bulb is elongated, not round, and ovoid. The weight of a ripe bulb does not exceed 50 grams. It has many teeth, so it grows not one on the vine, but immediately as a family. Up to 30 bulbs can grow in the nest at the same time.

How to plant?

It is recommended to plant on heavier soils than those prepared for onions. However, you need to ensure that the soil is fertile and fertilized. Legumes are good predecessors. The family onion needs to be rotated, it is possible to return to the place where it grew earlier, not earlier than in 3-4 years.

They are planted in early spring; in the southern latitudes of Russia, onions can be planted before winter. Given the cold resistance, the onion bulbs tolerate frost well.

It is better to leave medium-sized bulbs for planting. And although large green mass is obtained from large ones and more daughter bulbs are driven out, it is better not to use large ones. It is much more profitable to plant often one-size bulbs, in this case, a uniform thickening and yield are obtained.

When to clean up?

Here, just as with onions, you can focus on the lodging of leaves. This happens from about mid-July to mid-August. The bulbs are removed, separated and dried. Then they start calibrating: they are taken to the sevok, and the rest can be braided into braids and sent for winter storage.
