Sosnovsky's hogweed was brought to Russia presumably from Georgia by Stalin. They began to introduce this plant into culture in our country as feed for livestock, seduced by its ability to build up a huge green mass in a short time. However, since the milk of cows after eating silage from such hogweed became bitter, the collective and state farms ultimately abandoned its cultivation.

Sosnovsky's hogweed, abandoned by breeders, of course, immediately began its triumphant march through the territory of Russia, displacing other field grasses. Over time, this plant has become a big problem for summer residents. And of course, today many gardeners are interested in how to destroy Sosnovsky's hogweed on the site.

What is the difficulty

One of the features of this weed is that it can grow up to 3 m in height. Such plants can look simply frightening by the middle of summer. The diameter of the stem of the Sosnovsky hogweed at the surface of the earth often reaches 10 cm.

Of course, it is very difficult to mow such huge plants even at the initial stages of development. In addition, the hogweed juice of this species is poisonous and can cause severe burns. When mowing, the plant sprays it literally in all directions.

It is difficult to remove Sosnovsky's hogweed on the site also because the root of this plant is able to remain viable for up to 12 years, even if the green mass is regularly mowed.

How to destroy a hogweed

Before starting the fight against this dangerous weed, the gardener, of course, first of all should protect himself from the appearance of burns and poisoning. A summer resident who decides to get rid of Sosnovsky's cow parsnip needs to wear long sleeves and trousers.

In this case, the airways should be closed with a gauze bandage, a scarf or cap should be put on your head, and gloves should be on your hands. In no case should the juice of this plant be allowed to come into contact with the skin during the destruction work.

Single Sosnovsky hogweed on the site will be easiest to remove with a shovel. At the same time, the summer resident will have to dig rather deeply. Individual roots of this plant can reach a depth of 2 m. But in any case, the growth point of the hogweed, which is usually located at a depth of 7-10 cm underground, must be cut off.

The fight against Sosnovsky's hogweed in the event that he occupied large areas in the garden will be even more difficult. In the spring, the area where the hogweed "settled" must be treated with strong herbicides.

Unfortunately, such means, most likely, will not cause any harm to old roots. Indeed, as already mentioned, the roots of the Sosnovsky hogweed go very deep into the ground. However, herbicides will still prevent new young weeds from growing on the site.

Since the beginning of summer, hogweed in the garden in the future must be periodically mowed, preventing umbrellas from appearing on the plants. The largest hogweed in the affected area, among other things, should be given herbicide injections from time to time. In this way, it is possible to ensure that the destruction agent still reaches the plant roots.

Immediately after the injections are given to the large hogweed, the overgrown area should be treated with herbicides again. Thus, it is advisable to proceed after each mowing.

The fight against hogweed: the use of covering materials

One of the features of this weed is, among other things, that it grows very poorly without sunlight. Therefore, in the event that there are still no old, well-rooted plants on the site, opaque covering materials can also be used to combat Sosnovsky's hogweed.

The area where this weed began to grow, you just need to cover, for example, with a thick black plastic wrap. This is most likely to prevent the appearance of young greenery of the Sosnovsky hogweed. It will take several more years to cover the infected area with a film to completely destroy the weed.
