And the answer comes by itself. Basil is a native of warm countries. The first important condition for seedling is warm soil. But, it must be borne in mind that basil is sown only with dry seeds! There is no need to rush to sowing (for the central part of Russia). Sowing in open ground is carried out in late May - early June.

Seeds are sown into the ground when the soil warms up to 12-15 degrees, to a depth of 1.5 cm. Seedlings appear in 2-3 weeks. The distance between the rows should be 20-30 cm, and in a row 25 cm. Place no more than 10 plants per 1 m2.

During the period of seed germination, the need for moisture is very high, so you need to water the seedlings. If a cold snap is expected, cover the bed with foil or covering material. Place the bed in a place warmed by the sun, protected from cold northerly winds. Basil loves fertile, organic, light soils. The best predecessors are potatoes, legumes, cucumber, tomato.

Basil is easy to clean. It is practically not damaged by pests, and diseases (fusarium and gray mold) appear only with excessive moisture and thickened planting. Therefore, it is necessary to thin out plants in a timely manner and remove diseased ones.
