Necessary

  • - scythe and rake;
  • - mowing machine and tedder.

Instructions

Step 1

Start hay making in dry, hot weather after the grass has grown enough. In central Russia, hay begins to harvest from the second decade of June and continues to harvest until the second decade of August. The best cereal hay is obtained from wheatgrass, meadow timothy, bluegrass, and bent grass. Never mow reeds, rushes and sedges. From such hay in animals, inflammation of the alimentary canal occurs, moreover, there are few nutrients in these plants, especially after flowering.

Step 2

The best herbs for harvesting are clover, luceria, sainfoin, rank, peas, vetch. To get green hay, harvest in sunny weather. Drying will be done by wind and sun exposure. This method allows you to get the highest quality hay.

Step 3

If you are mowing in hard-to-reach areas for the passage of equipment, then mow the grass in the simple old way with a scythe. This method is now rarely used by anyone. With the advent of tractors with mowers, hay harvesting and harvesting is very easy and fast.

Step 4

Dry the grass in the swaths throughout the day by constantly turning it over with a rake or tractor tedder. In the evening, fold the mown hay into small heaps. Scatter again in the morning to dry. Use this method to dry until fully cooked. The readiness of the hay is determined by twisting the bundle, if the grass is easy to curl, but does not break, and there are no signs of excessive moisture content, then it is time to make a haystack or bales with a tractor.

Step 5

In hot weather, drying takes two to three days. If it rains, the quality of the hay is lost; instead of green, you can get brown hay, which contains much less vitamins and nutrients.

Step 6

In inclement weather, use stakes or poles to dry, making cross-shaped crossbars from them, on which you put the dried grass. This method does not guarantee that the hay will not grow moldy and will be suitable for forage purposes. This is why it is so important to prepare hay in good weather.
