Procurement of firewood is, at first glance, a simple matter. But, if you look closely at the process, you can see a lot of subtleties. Dry firewood is the main requirement for them. Damp firewood not only burns worse and gives less heat - its heat is uneven, and the stove or fireplace will quickly become covered with soot from the inside. Therefore, you need to follow the rules that will allow you to prepare firewood that is optimal in size, shape and dryness.

Step 1

First, you need to calculate the amount of firewood that you need for the winter. Correct calculation will help not to swing the ax half to death, and at the same time, not to sit in the cold by the end of winter, saving every piece of wood. The general rule is this: a log house with an ordinary Russian stove consumes 1 cubic meter of firewood per 10 square meters of heated area during the winter with an average temperature of -15 degrees. That is, a house with an area of 100 square meters requires 10 cubic meters of firewood. These are about two loaded ZIL vehicles. If the winter is supposed to be cold, then, accordingly, more firewood will be needed. And always remember in reserve: at least one cubic meter should be added to the figure obtained after all the calculations.

Step 2

When the volume is clear, it is time to start preparing documents for future firewood. It is possible to simply go into the forest and cut down trees, but it is illegal: responsibility has been established for this. You should go to the forestry and write an application for the release of the required amount of wood. The forester in a specially designated area (plot) will make an allotment for the required amount of firewood. In this case, a sales contract is drawn up with the applicant. After payment, a special ticket is issued. Only with such a ticket in your pocket, you can go to the designated area and start cutting.

Step 3

Felling trees is not easy, and for beginners it is also dangerous. Usually, the first notch is made on the side where you plan to drop the tree. It should resemble a removed wedge and reach about a third of the circumference of the barrel. Then another notch is made on the opposite side - deeper and several centimeters higher. When the size of the second notch is critical, the tree will lean in the direction of the first notch. From a lying tree, in whatever direction it falls, you should run away.

Step 4

All branches and twigs must be chopped off from the fallen trees. Then the tree is sawn into chocks - logs from 40 to 50 centimeters long. In order for the size to be respected all the time, a special mold is used - a stick, which is applied to the trunk, measuring out the next chock.

Step 5

The sawn lumps need to be chopped into logs. For this, a special massive ax (cleaver) and a deck are used. It is better to choose a deck more powerful so that it itself does not suffer during the splitting process. Chopping firewood is a gambling and exciting activity. True, you first need to gain a little experience, otherwise there is a high risk of injuring yourself. The chock is installed on the deck and hit with a cleaver. If the chock did not split from the first blow, and the cleaver sat down in the middle, it is turned over and knocked out on the same deck.

Step 6

Thin chocks are split into so-called "fours", thicker ones - into "sixes" and "eight". As a rule, the lumps are split by "rays", so that each log in cross-section is like a wedge.

Step 7

Usually, after splitting, a mountain of logs is formed in the middle of the yard. You should not rush to carefully fold them: if you leave this heap for a few days, it will dry out much better. The longer the wood dries, the better. If inclement weather is expected outside, a canopy is erected over the firewood, under which it can be dried even in the rain.

Step 8

The last procedure is to fold a woodpile out of firewood. The woodpile should be located in a place from which it will be convenient to carry firewood into the house, because you have to run after them in the frost. Usually, 4 stakes are driven in near the wall of a bath or shed, which should support the future woodpile from the sides. Bricks are laid between them so that the firewood does not pull water from the soil. The firewood in the woodpile should be well blown by the breeze, so chips or branches should be laid between the rows. From above, the woodpile is covered with polyethylene or roofing felt.
