Why glass in boiling water can burst

Sometimes, when boiled in water, cans burst. You can, if not get rid of this trouble, then at least minimize it. To do this, housewives resort to various tricks, boil jars using rags, boards, millet, slightly heat the glass before boiling. Some ways they can't even explain - they just "everyone does it".

The reason that the glass breaks is its uneven expansion when heated. The thicker the jar, the more likely it is to break. Thick-walled glass warms up worse, the same expansion in the vessel is established very slowly. If the cans are sharply dipped into boiling water, this can provoke the appearance of microcracks, due to which the glass breaks.

To prevent the jars from bursting during boiling, it is best to reheat them gradually, slowly. The glass will be provided with uniform heating, without sudden temperature fluctuations.

How to boil cans

At the bottom of a large saucepan, put a plate, and arrange jars at the top. Everything must be poured with water in such a way that the container is completely covered. If the jars are empty, water is also poured inside, and the jar is covered with a lid - preferably a metal one. But if the cans are boiled along with the workpieces placed inside, they, of course, are already closed.

It is necessary to install the jars so that when boiling they do not knock against each other - this can also lead to the formation of cracks. To prevent the cans from touching, a smooth fabric can be laid between them.

The water should be heated gradually, over medium heat. After the water has boiled, the cans are kept in water, depending on their volume: from 0.5 to 0.75 liters - 10 minutes, liter - at least 15 minutes, two-liter - 20 minutes. Three-liter are boiled for 25 minutes to half an hour. After this time, the jars are carefully removed from the boiling water, and new ones are placed in the pan.

As you boil, the water in the pot will gradually evaporate. To keep it at the same level, you will have to add a little and with great care so that the temperature of the water in the pan does not noticeably change.

In order not to burn yourself while removing cans from boiling water, you can use meat tongs and other auxiliary items. There are also special devices for gripping the neck, but they are only suitable for cans with blanks. But with their help, you can get the jar neatly, not very quickly - the glass can burst not only from a sharp change in temperature from cold to hot, but sometimes vice versa.
