When renovating an apartment or house, you often have to do the work of replacing old metal pipes with new ones made of polyethylene. They are much cheaper, lighter and more durable. However, a completely different technology is used for their installation. The connection of polyethylene pipes can be detachable (socket with elastic seals, flange connection) and one-piece (butt welding, socket welding).

How to connect polyethylene pipes

It is necessary

  • • polyethylene pipes;
  • • heater with fluoroplastic heating surface;
  • • pipe centering mechanism;
  • • a mechanism that creates pressure during the axial movement of the pipe end;
  • • a device for leveling and cleaning the edges of the pipes being welded.

Instructions

Step 1

Resistance butt welding

Prepare pipes for welding: measure the desired length, cut, clean the ends. Install the ends of the pipes to be welded in a special machine, align and center them.

Place an electric heater with appropriate nozzles between the ends, rest the ends of the pipes into it and hold until the polyethylene begins to melt. After that, using the mechanism for axial movement, move one end of the pipe, quickly remove the heater plate, and press the ends of the pipes together as quickly as possible. Hold the joint in this position until it cools initially. Cool it down completely with water.

Step 2

For resistance welding (butt welding) you will need special equipment, which includes:

• heater with fluoroplastic heating surface;

• pipe centering mechanism;

• a mechanism that creates pressure during the axial movement of the pipe end;

• a device for leveling and cleaning the edges of the pipes being welded.

Socket welding

To connect pipes, take a special intermediate element - a fitting. It can be a corner, a tee, a coupling, depending on how you want to make the connection. An electric heating element is soldered into it at the factory at the joints with the pipes.

Connect the installed element to the power source, wait for the polyethylene to warm up. Connect the part and the pipe, fix the position until it cools. The joint is ready.

Step 3

Flare connection with elastic seals

This method is used to connect pipes that work without increasing the pressure inside them (for example, sewer pipes). For pipes to be connected, one end of the pipe is usually made, and the other in the form of a socket.

Slide elastic rubber seals onto the normal end of the pipe. Insert it tightly into the flared end of the pipe. Due to the fact that the inner and outer walls of polyethylene pipes are very smooth, the connection will be strong and tight. At the same time, it is possible, if necessary, to disassemble the joint.
