Sandpaper consists of a paper or cloth backing, on which a layer of abrasive powder is applied. The less abrasive powder there is per square centimeter of paper, the rougher it is. In accordance with the grain size, a specific number is assigned to the paper, by which you can select the paper for specific purposes.

Emery paper is used for various purposes: in order for it to correspond to the work performed, it is necessary to choose the right grain size and type of abrasive material - two main parameters that characterize sandpaper.

An abrasive material is applied to the base of the sandpaper. Depending on how far apart its individual particles are from each other and what their size is, the paper is assigned a certain grain size.

Distinguish between industrial and commercial sandpaper, the first is used in enterprises, the second - in everyday life.

Coarse sandpaper

At the moment, in most countries of the world, including Russia, it is customary to designate sanding paper in accordance with the international standard ISO 6344. In accordance with it, paper is designated by the letter P and a number from 12 to 2500, which characterizes the size of the abrasive grains.

P12 to P36 grit is considered very coarse and is used, for example, to remove old ink. The grain size of such paper can be up to 1 mm. Such paper is not used for finishing work, since it leaves scratches and after it the surface is necessarily processed with finer sandpaper.

Grit sizes from P40 to P60 are considered coarse, paper of this class is used for rough surface cleaning, to smooth out small irregularities.

Sandpaper with grit from P80 to P120 can already be sanded if there are no special requirements for its quality. The grain size of such paper is from 200 to 100 microns.

Paper with grit from P150 to P180 is used for sanding wood products for painting. For household purposes, less coarse sandpaper is rarely used.

All P12 to P180 grit sandpaper is coarse.

Fine-grained sandpaper

Paper with a grain size less than 63 microns is considered fine.

Grit sizes P240 to P280 allow sanding between paint coats. Grit paper from P400 to P600 is used for final surface sanding and polishing.

Sandpaper with grit from P1000 to P2500 is used for polishing ceramic, plastic, metal products, as well as for wet polishing.

In addition to the import standard, there is also a domestic GOST, which is still used in everyday life.

Types of abrasives

There are four main types of abrasives that are used to create sandpaper:

- ceramic abrasive: the most durable material, used for rough initial surface treatment;

- silicon carbide: mainly used for the treatment of metal and plastic surfaces and surfaces covered with paint;

In rare cases, the hardest mineral, diamond, is used to make sandpaper.

- aluminum oxide: a soft mineral used for treating wooden surfaces, sandpaper based on this abrasive is the most wear-resistant, which makes it possible to reduce their consumption;

- pomegranate: also used for processing wood, pomegranate sandpaper is usually used in the final stage of processing, as it allows you to create a surface that is more amenable to staining.
