Planting zygocactus

Other names for this plant: Decembrist, Schlumberger, Christmas cactus. Zygocactus is available for growing even for beginners unfamiliar with the intricacies of caring for indoor plants. If the plant was purchased in a store, you need to transplant it at home in another container, since the greenhouse substrate, as a rule, is not intended for long-term growing of flowers in it. You need to immediately buy a special mixture for succulent plants and a suitable pot from a flower shop.

If you wish, you can make such a mixture yourself. The soil should contain equal proportions of sod and leafy soil, peat and fine river sand. In a pot for planting, drainage holes are required to avoid stagnant water when watering. An important condition: the earthen lump after transplantation must be completely braided by roots. Excess soil will cause the soil to compact and acidify. The most optimal pot size is 15-18 cm in diameter if the plant is adult.

They carry out the transshipment of the Decembrist, examining the roots for damage. If rotten roots are found, you need to carefully cut them out and sprinkle with crushed coal. After that, the plant is planted in a fresh substrate. After planting, the soil is well squeezed by hands and spilled with water. If the zygocactus is grown for a long time, it also needs to be transplanted once every 3-4 years.

Simultaneously with the transplant, it is necessary to form a bush. On each branch, several segments are plucked off by hand, with their simultaneous twisting. With this method, the plant is less injured, and the removed cuttings can be used for reproduction. Before planting, you need to dry them for 2-3 days in the shade, and then plant them in a damp substrate and cover with plastic wrap. In this case, you need to ventilate the greenhouse so that the cuttings do not start to rot. In such conditions, fresh roots are quickly formed on them and seedlings can be planted in a permanent place.

How to care for a zygocactus

In order for the plant to annually please its owners with lush flowering, important agricultural techniques must be observed in its cultivation. It is imperative to provide the zygocactus with a rest period. This time falls in autumn, should last 2-2.5 months. During this period, the zygocactus should be placed in a cool room with a temperature of 12-15 ° C and watering and feeding, which were carried out in the summer, should be reduced.

After this time, the plant is transferred to a warm room and watering is increased. At the same time, high humidity in the room should be ensured, since the zygocactus is very picky about this indicator during flowering. If the air in the visit is too dry, the plant may simply shed its buds. It is impossible at this time to transfer the zygocactus to another place and change its position, since in this case there may also be no flowering. After the end of flowering, the plant should rest for 3-4 weeks, then the active growth of the vegetative mass begins. At this time, it is necessary to increase watering, feeding and produce the formation of a zygocactus.

With good care, this plant can bloom profusely and for a long time from December to February, raising the spirits with its elegant appearance.
