Properties of acrylic varnish

The color of this kind of varnish is usually transparent, but some compositions are matte white, it all depends on the properties and the manufacturer. The structure of a varnish with a good shelf life is uniform, regardless of how long it has stood without moving. A frozen rather dense film may form on the surface, which indicates a violation of the storage temperature or the tightness of the container.

In a sealed original packaging, the varnish should be stored for at least 12 months. The storage temperature should be from +1 to + 35 ° C.

Before applying the varnish over a large area, whether it is familiar mid-latitude wood or exotic wood, it should be tested on a small area. Water-based varnishes on many types of wood can cause very significant discoloration in unexpected ways.

Subsequently, caution should be taken with materials in contact with the floor and at the same time containing softeners in their composition. These can be the casters of chairs and the backing of some carpets, and they also often cause a color change in the varnish.

On a dry surface, cleaning is carried out without the use of abrasive cleaning agents and sharp objects.

Methods and conditions for using acrylic varnish

When applied to the surface, its minimum temperature should not fall below 8 ° C. Temperatures already below 15 ° C make it very difficult for the varnish to dry and increase the drying time. If the temperature conditions are correct, the application is carried out with a soft brush or roller and only in one direction. The number of layers to achieve the desired effect can be different, but, as a rule, it is not less than 3. If necessary, perform intermediate grinding.

At an ambient temperature of about 20 ° C, the varnish layer dries for about 2 hours, but the loads can be carried out no earlier than 12 hours after the last layer was applied. The varnish will acquire the final hardness only after 8-14 days, until that time it is much easier to damage it.

Fire safety requirements when working with such varnishes do not provide for special measures, since the substance is not flammable.

Before starting work, the parquet surface must be carefully polished, sanded and must not contain residues of fats, oils, paints, wax, wood dust. Each subsequent layer is applied only after the previous one has completely dried. In order to avoid the effect of lifting wood fibers in the work, for the final grinding of the layer, a fine sandpaper of 120 and higher is used.

Before the first application, you can apply protective or decorative antiseptics compatible with this type of varnish.
