What a scilla looks like

Scylla is a perennial primrose belonging to the Asparagus family. Previously, some botanists ranked it as a member of the Hyacinth family, while others as a Liliaceae. That is why different information can be found in the literature. Scylla means "sea bow" in translation. Sprout is another name for the plant. They began to call him that because of the places of growth. Very often, perennials can be found in meadows between forest glades.

Scylla is not whimsical and grows everywhere. It is distributed throughout Russia, as well as in Europe, Asia and some African countries. Many people are happy to breed it in the adjoining territories, personal plots. In appearance, the plant looks like a snowdrop, but there are significant differences between them. Scylla flowers are not always white. Varieties with blue, blue, purple flowers look very impressive.

Scylla is represented by over 90 varieties. Siberian beetle is widespread on the territory of Russia. The blue tint of her colors is pleasing to the eye. Leaves on this perennial appear only during the flowering period. In cloudy weather, the plant almost lies on the ground, the flowers do not open, and in sunny weather the stems begin to stretch upward.

Scylla autumnal blooms with blue or purple flowers only at the end of August. Scylla Mishchenko pleases the eye with blue and white flowers that appear around April. In specialized stores, you can buy seeds and bulbs of the original varieties.

Growing a scilla

Planting a perennial

When choosing a place to plant a scilla, it is better to give preference to sunny lawns or slightly shaded areas. The screech grows well in the thin shade of deciduous trees. It is better not to plant it near conifers.

Scylla grows on sandy and clayey soil, but it is not very demanding on soils. The plant loves humus, peat, and mineral fertilizers containing phosphorus and calcium. Perennial, like all bulbous, does not tolerate stagnant moisture, so it is better not to plant it in lowlands. In landscaping, you can use it to decorate alpine slides.

Scylla propagates by seeds or bulbs. The seeds can be purchased at a specialty store or, if the perennial is already growing in the garden, you can pick them yourself when the boxes of faded flowers begin to crack. This happens in mid or late June. Seeds should be planted immediately in the ground and watered abundantly.

After the leaves of the scylla die off, you can dig out several bulbs and separate the children from them, and then plant them at a depth of 3 cm at a distance of 5 cm from each other. Self-seeding is possible in the woodland, therefore, within a couple of years after planting, spring flowers can be found in unexpected places on the garden plot.

You can grow a indoor scilla by planting an onion in a pot. The period when the seed is dormant is approximately 8-9 weeks. If you want a potted plant to bloom in early spring, you need to plant it in September.

Plant care

Scylla does not require special care, which is why gardeners appreciate her. In order for the plant to bloom more abundantly, you can feed it with phosphorus or potash fertilizers in early spring. In the first year after planting, it is recommended to occasionally water the perennial and mulch, loosen the soil. Mulching with straw, sawdust allows you to retain moisture in the nutrient substrate and prevents the intensive growth of weeds.

It is advisable to divide and plant the bulbs only 3 years after planting the plant. In autumn, organic fertilizers can be applied to the soil. In the first year after planting the bulbs, it is recommended to cover the plant for the winter. Coniferous branches are suitable as a covering material. Winter hardiness is one of the main advantages of this type. There is no need to dig up the bulbs in the fall and store them in a cool place.

Scylla is almost immune to disease. Bulbs can only be damaged by rot if the soil is too wet or the growing area is flooded. Of the pests, bears can destroy them. They are capable of mechanically damaging the bulbs. Insect control consists in digging up the earth before planting plants in open ground or treating the soil with special preparations.
