Manchurian walnut is a magnificent tree that is used both as an alternative to the capricious walnut in the harsh Siberian climate, but also as a decorative decoration of the personal plot. It grows up to 10-25 m in height, is beautiful with a dense spreading crown, has a high fruit yield. Phytoncides and the bactericidal substance juglone, secreted by the foliage of the walnut tree, cannot be tolerated by blood-sucking insects, and these substances also rid the air of dust particles and disinfect the air. A majestic fruit tree with spreading branches and a dense succulent crown will aesthetically form any decorative corners in the plots, especially if to create a garden design it is alternated when planting next to conifers, against the background of a mown thick lawn. Moreover, the Manchurian nut has many beneficial properties for health:

  • fresh leaves, like plantain, are pressed against open wounds for disinfection
  • a decoction of fresh foliage helps to cure diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, inflammation of the gums and flexible feet (immerse your feet in the decoction for 30 minutes for several days in a row)
  • nut kernels contain many vitamins, 50% polyunsaturated fats (consumed raw)

Planting a Manchu nut

It is almost impossible to transplant seedlings without loss, therefore, for a Manchurian nut seedling, you should immediately choose the final planting site. Nuts love sunny places, reaching for the sky if there is no shade. Planting in lowlands is allowed, but only on mineral-rich, oily soil. The root of the tree spreads very deeply and widely, so it is better to plant the tree away from the foundation of the house and other buildings.

A seedling should be planted either in early spring (early April) or in September. Dig a hole 100 cm deep and 50 cm wide. Chipped brick or gravel is suitable as drainage. Then there is a layer of earth for drainage and planting mixture (in case of poor soil). Fill the hole with the seedling with a mixture of earth, humus and sand. It is recommended to add fertilizers phosphate and potassium, wood ash (from 1 cup).

Usually 2-year-old seedlings are planted, after planting they should be tied to a peg immediately. Pour a bucket of water on top of the root before filling the potting soil. Then add earth, crush it thoroughly and pour in another bucket. Spread a mixture of peat and sawdust, compost around the trunk.

Seedlings for the winter should be insulated to preserve. In young Manchu nuts, the tips of the branches often freeze over. Wrap the trunk with a net from mice and rats. The mesh must be dug into the ground and trampled down well.

Reproduction of trees is also possible in another way - by seeds. To do this, choose the best tree nuts with a 1-2-year storage. You can plant them either in the spring or in the fall. You should know that the Manchu nut does not tolerate acidic soil, therefore, when planting, you should sprinkle the hole with wood ash. The depth of the fossa is from 6 to 10 cm. Before planting, it is advisable to moisten the nut with kerosene so that it seems unpleasant for mice. In spring, under favorable conditions, well-watered fruits will give a powerful sprout.

Tree care

When transplanting a seedling to a permanent place, you should maintain the original orientation of the tree in relation to parts of the world. So it will take root and get stronger faster. The plant is very fond of moisture and frequent watering. The soil of a young tree should always be watered. Regular watering is 3-4 times a month, but not until a puddle forms, without flooding. By the third year, it should be watered less often - up to 1-2 times a month.

After the fourth year, the plant is watered only once a month. Damp soil at the roots should be loosened. With this care, in the fourth year, the Manchu nut blooms and enters the fruiting stage with edible nuts.

In the first years of growth, regular feeding with phosphorus-potassium fertilizer is recommended - once a summer. It is advisable to pour under the root along the entire diameter using a shovel of wood ash, this will allow the culture to develop correctly and form a beautiful crown.

Trees tolerate dry land and light flooding very well. To prevent burns, the trunk must be whitened with lime and clay.

Another important point in caring for a Manchu nut is crown pruning. In fact, the nut does not need to be artificially formed tops. He is able to grow a rounded and very even crown himself. However, you still need to cut out dried and too crooked branches. And if the nut grows in a small area, then you cannot do without trimming the entire crown, because you need to give the opportunity to grow and neighboring crops.
