Description and characteristics of meadow bluegrass

Meadow bluegrass is a perennial winter crop belonging to the cereal family. The plant forms an even sod and a beautiful, dense and uniform green grass cover.

The ideal growing conditions for meadow bluegrass are fertile, loose and moderately moist soil. It can often be seen in meadows and forest edges in temperate zones.

The flowering time of meadow bluegrass is from late May to early July, and bears fruit in late July - August. The flowers of the plant are similar in shape to three to five-flowered spikelets about 6 mm long.

Meadow bluegrass tolerates frosts and other unfavorable weather conditions.

Meadow bluegrass for decorative lawns

Unpretentious care and beautiful appearance make meadow bluegrass one of the most popular plants for planting lawns.

Advantages of meadow bluegrass: high degree of "trampling", dense cover and resistance to unfavorable climatic conditions.

The main disadvantage of meadow bluegrass is slow growth. Therefore, it is often used in conjunction with other types of lawn grasses that grow more actively. Usually meadow bluegrass is supplemented with red or meadow fescue, bent grass and ryegrass.

In meadow bluegrass, creeping rhizomes, which form a large number of processes. Thanks to this, the bluegrass fills the “bald spots” on the lawns on its own, no additional seeding is required.

Meadow bluegrass does not grow quickly. Plants develop fully only in the second or even the third or fourth year.

Lawn varieties of meadow bluegrass: Balin, Bluegrass, Panduro, Sobra, Connie.

The Balin variety is distinguished by its high endurance and early flowering. The grass cover does not lose its bright green color even in autumn and winter. It is often used for landing on sports and playgrounds.

The bluegrass of the meadow variety Bluegars has a very dense green cover. It is well suited for places with unstable climatic conditions.

A feature of the Panduro variety is its resistance to various diseases that meadow bluegrass is susceptible to. It is usually used for planting sports and general lawns.

Connie is a slow-growing, wear-resistant variety of meadow bluegrass. Due to the vertical overgrowth of shoots, the sod is formed rather dense. This variety is practically not susceptible to various kinds of diseases.

Meadow bluegrass variety Sobra combines well with reed fescue. The result is a uniform and drought-resistant lawn. It is used for rolling lawns, as well as for general and sports lawns.

Rules for caring for a meadow bluegrass lawn

A good lawn depends on correct sowing. First you need to prepare the soil for sowing: remove all weeds, dig up the ground, level, compact the soil and then loosen the soil by about 2-3 centimeters.

Chemical herbicides (Roundup) are used to more effectively remove weeds.

The recommended amount of seeds is 40 grams per 1 m². You need to plant seeds to a depth of two millimeters. The most convenient way to do this is with a special lawn seeder.

The first weeks after sowing, the lawn needs daily abundant watering. Important: Do not walk on the lawn for several weeks after planting. Regular feeding and fertilization will only benefit your lawn.

Standard lawn care:

  • in March, a visual inspection and elimination of obvious irregularities is required;
  • mineral fertilizers are applied in April;
  • in May, you need to remove dry leaves and mow the lawn;
  • in June, a repeated mowing and leveling of the borders of the lawn cover is carried out;
  • in July and August, watering, top dressing and haircutting are carried out as necessary.

In the autumn, preparations are made for winter. The damaged areas are removed, and the lawn is sown.

After mowing, the height of the meadow bluegrass lawn is approximately 4 mm. The grass grows fairly evenly. Bluegrass prefers sunny locations and fertile soils. However, it tolerates late frosts and severe winters well, and is drought-resistant. But in the summer it is better to water the lawn abundantly so that the grass is brighter and more juicy in color.
