Good onions are grown in 2 seasons, first you need to plant seeds (the so-called nigella), and next year plant them in the beds and get excellent, healthy and strong bulbs. In addition, growing onion sets from seeds will allow you to get cheap planting material.

It is necessary

  • - onion seeds;
  • - potassium permanganate;
  • - rotted manure or compost;
  • - potash and phosphorus fertilizers;
  • - gardening Tools.

Instructions

Step 1

It is believed that the best precursors for onions are pumpkin seeds: cucumbers, zucchini and pumpkins, as well as peas, herbs and tomatoes. Based on this, choose a place for planting onions with seeds. Prepare the garden bed in which you will grow the onion sets in the fall. Before digging, add rotted manure or compost, potash and phosphorus fertilizers at the rate of 30 g per 1 square meter of the garden. Dig deep into the soil.

Step 2

In the spring, weed out any emerging weeds a few days before planting. Loosen the surface of the prepared bed.

Step 3

To protect the seeds from fungal diseases, treat them in a solution of potassium permanganate before planting. Make a pink solution, dip the onion seeds in it, leave for half an hour. Then take out, rinse thoroughly under running hot water, cool. Spread them out on a damp cotton cloth and cover them on top. Leave the nigella to germinate for 2-3 days. After this procedure, spread the seeds in one layer and let them dry.

Step 4

Onion seeds can be planted as early as late April, weather permitting, or early May. On the prepared bed, make grooves 2 cm deep and 10 cm apart. Sprinkle seeds into the grooves (the plantings can be quite thickened) and cover them with humus or garden soil.

Step 5

Nigella rises very quickly. To get a larger seedling, seedlings can be thinned out, but rather large onion heads grow from small planting material.

Step 6

Planting should be watered frequently, but not very abundantly. After watering, loosen the soil and weed periodically. These measures will prevent the appearance of onion flies. 2-3 times a season it is useful to feed the plantings with mullein infusion.

Step 7

After the first bulbs are formed, stop watering, loosening and feeding. When the feather withers and completely lies on the ground, and the neck of the bulbs becomes thinner, you can start harvesting the onion sets. Dig it out of the garden and hang it in a dark, ventilated area to dry out.
