Important rules for the pre-planting of onion sets when growing turnip onions:

Checking the quality of onion sets

Sevok must be sorted out and dried, diseased and affected onions must be removed. At the same time, it is sorted by size. First, large bulbs are planted, then medium and small ones. This is done for uniform seedlings.

We warm the onion sets

A few weeks before planting, the sets should be warmed up, which will help avoid shooting. This is especially true for sevka purchased, if you do not know the storage conditions. Your own set, which is large in size and stored at low temperatures, also needs to be warmed up. To warm up, the seedlings are scattered near a warm battery or taken out in the sun on warm spring days.

We process onion sets from diseases and pests

For 3-4 hours, the seedlings are soaked in a saline solution. Table salt 1 tbsp. a spoon with a slide is dissolved in one liter of warm water and the bulbs are immersed in the solution. So that they do not float, the bulbs can first be poured into a nylon stocking or gauze bag. After a salt bath, the seedlings need to be rinsed well with clean water, changing the water several times. Some gardeners use a stronger saline solution (a pack of salt for half a bucket of water), but in any case, be sure to rinse off excess salt well. Salt has a detrimental effect on the eggs of onion flies, ticks, thrips. To some extent, this is also prevention from diseases.

The washed onion sets are again soaked for a couple of hours in a dark solution of potassium permanganate from diseases, since onions are prone to fungal infections. After 2 hours, the seedlings are washed again with water and slightly ventilated from excess water. Sevok is ready for planting. Instead of potassium permanganate, chemicals such as copper sulfate, copper oxychloride are also suitable.

If necessary, the sowing can be soaked in a solution of epin, zircon, humate, in a solution of mineral fertilizers to stimulate the roots. But the onion itself has a large supply of nutrition and does not need such additional processing.
