In case of minor damage to the plastic product, you can try to glue it. When working with this material, the correct choice of adhesive will be the most important success factor. Usually, the manufacturer indicates its marking on the wrong side of the plastic. Be sure to study the characteristics of this material, otherwise the result of the repair will disappoint you. Bonding plastic is a real science, so do not neglect the advice of experienced specialists and carefully study the instructions for using the glue.

It is necessary

  • - glue for plastic;
  • - acetone or plastic cleaner;
  • - bath tampon;
  • - sandpaper No. 1000;
  • - brush, spray or syringe;
  • - a soldering iron or a hair dryer;
  • - fittings (if necessary);
  • - clamp or press.

Instructions

Step 1

Find out the composition of the plastic you are going to repair. This is extremely important, since scientists have developed a special glue for each type of this material. For example, you can only glue polyethylene with a special compound that changes the surface structure of this recalcitrant material and increases its ability to adhere to another part. For other plastics, you will need epoxies, solvents, or other mixtures.

Step 2

Please note that high-quality glue should not only ensure good adhesion (adhesion) of plastic surfaces, but also withstand strong mechanical stress and sudden changes in temperature and humidity. Consult a competent building materials store seller!

Step 3

Follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly. Usually, before gluing, it is recommended to carefully process plastic parts with fine-grained sandpaper and clean them from dust and other contaminants. To degrease, wipe the material with a cotton swab soaked in acetone. Alternatively, you can use a special plastic cleaner.

Step 4

Fit the parts to be glued tightly together. For a quality fit, you need to control the cleanliness of the sanded surface with your finger in order to prevent bumps and roughness.

Step 5

Allow the leveled and cleaned plastic to dry completely. Then apply the glue to it with a small brush or spray. Following the example of experienced craftsmen, for narrow gaps, you can use a disposable syringe filled with adhesive.

Step 6

It is possible to strengthen large cracks and chips on leaky plastic using fiberglass, or by reinforcing the seams with fused (glued) strips of dense canvas. Thermoplastic (that is, a mass that is easily amenable to heat treatment) can be pre-softened with a soldering iron or a construction hairdryer and a layer of small metal filings can be applied to it.

Step 7

Press down very hard on the plastic parts using a special holder (clamp) or a press. Make sure that the parts of the product do not come apart during this! It is generally recommended to continue this pressure for at least an hour, although the duration of the process depends on the specific material and temperature conditions. So, when heating thermoplastics, it is enough to hold the product under pressure for half an hour (until it cools and the glue hardens). If you glue the plastic without heat treatment at room temperature, then it should lie down for at least half a day before further use.
