On the eve of the summer cottage, active preparation for planting begins. Cucumbers are the most popular vegetable crop among gardeners. Despite the fact that it is easy to cultivate this vegetable, some summer residents are faced with poor plant growth and poor harvest. There may be several reasons for this.

Cucumber varieties are divided into bee-pollinated and parthenocarpic. The novice gardener should consider that it is better to grow varieties or hybrids that do not require pollination in the greenhouse. They are unpretentious, less susceptible to disease and very productive. The first reason for poor growth of cucumbers is a violation of planting dates. Since the plant is thermophilic, they are planted on the ridges when the average daily soil temperature is 10-12 degrees. Cucumbers are grown by seedlings or by sowing seeds directly into the ground. Moreover, they must be treated with a solution of potassium permanganate. Plants will be less susceptible to disease. Seedlings are ready for planting at the age of 25-30 days and with 5-6 true leaves on the stem. Another reason for the poor growth of cucumbers is insufficient plant nutrition during the growing season. Pay attention to some of its signs. The fruit is crooked, stunted in growth - there is not enough nitrogen. Water the plant and then apply the urea solution at the root. Leaves that turn yellow at the edges or a pear-shaped cucumber signal a lack of potassium. Feed with potassium sulfate or wood ash solution. After feeding, the plants are sprayed with a growth stimulant, which improves root nutrition, reduces the content of nitrates and promotes strong flowering. For good growth of cucumbers, the formation of lashes is required. Since the laying of the most productive ovaries is formed on the lateral shoots, they are pinched at a distance of 40-50 cm, and the main stem of the plant is cut off when it reaches a length of 80-120 cm. Cucumbers can grow poorly with a lack and excess of moisture. Seedlings are watered in small doses 2-3 times a week only in warm weather. Cold water cannot be used. Better to use a settled rainwater. To promote better flowering, watering is stopped 5-6 days before it starts. Too moist soil is harmful to the plant, this causes the growth of lashes to the detriment of fruiting and provokes the development of rot. Cucumbers are watered at the root so as not to cause the excitation of diseases by moisture on the leaves. If you cultivate bee-pollinated varieties, it is advisable to spray the plants with a sugar solution in lemon balm infusion every 2-3 days until the end of flowering. This bait attracts bees. As a result, the yield increases, and the cucumbers do not get sick. Inspect the plantings regularly. At the end of the second month of fruiting, cucumber leaves can become rough and prickly, slowing down fruit formation. Plants will revive and the leaves will become tender when sprayed with a mild urea solution. The appearance of white spots on them signals such a frequent disease as powdery mildew. In this case, a home-made spray solution helps well: pour 1 liter of skim milk or whey into 9 liters of water and add 10 drops of iodine. To prevent this disease during the period of plant growth, a continuous spraying with this solution is carried out every 10 days. Only 4 courses. The second most common disease is anthracnose. The leaf has rounded spots on the upper side, and a bloom of pink appears on the lower side. The fruits are covered with pink sores. At an early stage of the disease, it is enough to remove the damaged leaves, and spray the plant with 1% Bordeaux liquid. There are also many pests that interfere with the normal growth of cucumbers. The chemicals are toxic, so use herbal teas. For example, garlic infusion helps against aphids.
