From early spring to late autumn, the chestnut is beautiful. A lush crown, wide-spread finger-like leaves, flowers adorning trees with fluffy candles, fruits - first in the form of green thorny hedgehogs, and then - large dark seeds (usually called nuts) - all this in its natural sequence enchants, surprises, and pleases. Today, the growth of this, in fact, thermophilic plant has moved closer to the north, in the territories previously forbidden for him. Nowadays, horse chestnut can be found in gardens and parks in central Russia and much further north. You can grow it on your personal plot or right at the entrance of your home from the fruit.

Instructions

Step 1

Collect the chestnut fruits that fall from the tree as they ripen in the fall.

Step 2

For a higher guarantee of germination and further plant endurance, carry out the stratification procedure. To do this, place the chestnut fruit in a moist, cold environment. For example, sprinkle them with coarse river sand in a container and place them on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator or in a cold basement for 10 days. This option for preparing seeds is suitable if you decide to sow them in the fall.

Step 3

If you decide to sow chestnut seeds in the spring, then after winter storage at home (preferably in the basement or on the top shelf of the refrigerator), place them in a warm rather than cold environment. To do this, pour the fruits prepared for planting into warm water for 5 days (change the water periodically as it cools). Thus, the shell of the nut will soften and the embryo will swell.

Step 4

Plant the processed fruits in the place of your choice to a depth of 2-3 cm (no deeper than three diameters of the fruit). Seeds sown in autumn usually emerge one and a half to two weeks earlier than when sown in spring. But with spring sowing, the tree will strengthen better and "prepare" for the cold weather.

Step 5

This method of planting chestnuts is also acceptable: collect the fruits in late autumn, when they naturally undergo the stratification procedure, and after the New Year, plant them in an ordinary flower pot and water as you water your home indoor flowers. In the spring, transplant the sprout to a permanent place, continuing to water it regularly for the first time. Do not forget to make a fence around it, while it is still so small. When transplanting, you can cut a straight tap root, this will form a strong compact root system of the future tree, it will be strong and hardy.

Step 6

Another (very simple) method is as follows: in the fall, find a chestnut tree and bury the fruits that attacked from it with foliage. In the spring, immediately after the snow melts, dig out a deciduous pile and see - some of the fruits must germinate, you will see thick roots on them. Collect as much as you need and sow where you want without going too deep into the ground.
